Six SVSEF athletes have qualified for U16 Nationals, nine have made the cut for Junior Alpine Championships, and seven have been selected to compete at U.S. Alpine Championships.
"It's an exceptional group of individuals who have worked very hard this season to qualify for these events. Participating in national-level events takes a lot of hard work and dedication; we're excited to see what this experience has in store for all of them," remarked SVSEF Alpine Program Director Will Brandenburg.

Prep, Comp & PG, Junior Nationals, Anchorage
from Program Director Rick Kapala
Junior National races are being hosted by the Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage on the extensive trail system at Kincaid Park.
Monday
Monday's race was a freestyle 5km for all age classes of women (U16,U18, U20) and 5km for U16 Boys. U18 and U20 boys raced a 10km. The course was rolling with lots of quick transitions and offered our skiers a different feeling course than the big climbs common to our Intermountain courses. Conditions were fast on older transformed snow and the kids all said they really liked the course after the race. Johnny posted the second fastest time of the day among all boys, being bested only by Gus Schumacher of Alaska. Johnny and Gus skied together on the winning USA relay team at World Junior Championships. Johnny, who started on the course three minutes in front of Gus, said, “ I knew I had to take it out hard and try to get a gap because Gus finishes really fast." Johnny had a slim lead over Gus with two kilometers to go, but true to form, Gus was able to claw back the time needed to slip by Johnny in the final stretches of the course. It was a really good race for Johnny no matter how you cut it.
Overall, the Sun Valley kids had a good start to the week, with eight different skiers earning top 10 in the US, led by Johnny Hagenbuch’s national championship in the U18 Boys. Johnny was joined on the podium for U20 Scott Schulz, who took second, and Scott was joined in the U20 men's field by Adam Witkowski, who posted a ninth place finish. Also posting top 10s were Sammy Smith in fourth, Anja Grover in ninth and Logan Smith 10th for three SV gals in the top ten of the U16 girls. Sophia Mazzoni earned a top 10 with an eighth in the U18 women and Bjorn Halvorsen earned his first top ten medal with a ninth in the U16 boys.
Wednesday
Wednesday featured a classic individual sprint on a 1.4km course, with a really steep climb at the midway point followed by a high-speed plunging downhill and tight turn into the finish stretch. The days format was as follows: all skiers complete one all-out effort qualifying lap of the sprint course to try and post a top 30 time to get into the heats of their respective age classes. Once into the heats, the skiers are divided into five quarterfinals with six skiers per heat; the top two from each heat advance to the semifinals, along with the next two fastest skiers. Then the fastest two skiers from each semi advance along with the two fastest skiers to the finals.
Sun Valley skiers had an exceptional day in the sprint qualifier with a best ever 13 skiers making it into the afternoon heats. Leading the way for Sun Valley were Sophia Mazzoni (U18) and Logan Smith (U16) who both posted the fastest qualifying times in their age classes, along with Lily Brunelle (U20) who posted a second fastest qualifier for her class. The other SVSEF skiers who qualified for the heats included, on the girls side, Samantha Smith (U16), Sarah Morgan and Anja Jensen for U18 women, and Heidi Booher for U20 women. The boys who qualified for the heats included Scott Schulz, Adam Witkowski and Eli Eppolito (U20 men), Johnny Hagenbuch and Haydn Halvorsen (U18 men) and Bjorn Halvorsen, U16 men.
The afternoon brought challenging conditions as the course deteriorated into sugary deep snow, which made for tough climbing and tricky downhills. The Sun Valley kids though managed the conditions well, with again eight different SVSEF skiers posting top tens. Leading the way was Logan Smith who earned a national championship in the U16 Girls race. Logan successfully defended the sprint championship she won last year at the 2018 Junior Nationals held at Soldier Hollow. Joining her with podium finishes were Sarah Morgan who has the best the result of her season with a silver medal in the U18 women, and Johnny Hagenbuch, who returned to the podium for a second time with a third place in the U18 boys. Also earning top tens for our community were Scott Schulz in fourth and Adam Witkowski seventh in the U20 boys, Bjorn Halvorsen eighth in the U16 boys, Lily Brunelle fifth for U20 women and Samantha Smith fourth for U16 gals. This was Sammy's second race finishing fourth, and it’s a really solid week so far as she is actually a U14 (13 years old) who is racing up into the U16 age class. She also just competed at Freestyle Junior Nationals held at Snowbird, Utah, immediately before the start of Cross Country Junior Nationals.
Also skiing at the Championships for Sun Valley are Ted Yewer and Sebi Radl Jones (U18 boys), Luci Ludwig (U16 girls) and Tia Vontver, Jenna Nurge and Ella Wolter (U18 girls) to round out the 20 SVSEF skiers who are in attendance.
Next up is Friday’s mass start distance classic races with 5km for U16 boys and girls, 10km for U18 boys and U18 and U20 girls and 15km for U20 boys.

Our Athlete of the Week is Brian Heekin. He really surprised me at Targhee. Brian has been working really hard, and with all this soft snow he has really been pushing himself; it showed this past weekend in competition.

SNOWBOARD
KING OF THE WASATCH, PARK CITY
By Andy Gilbert
The series winners in each age group will receive an automatic invite to USASA Nationals in Copper Colorado Mar 30-Apr 5. We will receive those invites on Wednesday.
Series Finals, also known as the “King of the Wasatch” event consisted of Slopestyle #1 on Thursday, two Halfpipe events on Friday, Slopestyle #2 on Saturday and two more halfpipe events on Sunday.
The team as a whole is hitting their stride and riding really well. In our first pipe events of the season the Sun Valley kids showed why we have been a powerhouse in that event even in the face of losing our home venue. The kids showed that a solid season of riding Baldy had them ready to ride a perfect 22ft pipe in PC. Caleb Hothem went huge all day in the first pipe event and Jack Verhaeghe used the tech route to put himself on the podium as well. Olive Gilbert won both events on both days!
In Slopestyle our kids held their own on a venue that was just used for the FIS World Championships. There were 18 rail options in the first three features! That’s more than almost all of the jib features at Dollar! The kids were up for the challenge with solid runs in tough conditions on both days. Standouts were Brody McBee with a solid second run in the last event for the win. Channing Curci stepped up to some of the tougher rail features and was rewarded with second place both days.

FIS/USSA: LAURA FLOOD MEMORIAL, SUN VALLEY
IMC U16 Qualifier, 1SL/2GS
SVSEF hosted a weekend of racing, held annually in memory of Laura Flood. This was the last qualifier for Western Region U16 Championships, which SVSEF is hosting March 14-17. The competition field featured 75 women and 88 men. Ryder Sarchett took the overall win for the weekend, with victories in the men’s slalom and first GS, and a third place result behind SVSEF FIS skiers (1st place Laura Flood) in the final event of the weekend, a second GS race. Lots of SVSEF kids stepped it up this weekend for competition on their home turf; it was great to see all of their hard work and training put into practice.

IMD: DAVID WRIGHT MEMORIAL
From James Tautkus, IMD Head Coach
The SVSEF IMD team traveled to Park City this past weekend for the David Wright Memorial. It was the last qualifier for the season, with two giant slaloms and one parallel slalom. Paige DeHart and Cole Curci won the overall titles for the weekend. A significant result came from Paige in the first giant slalom; she won the race by an astounding six seconds.
Day one was really difficult with new snow, visibility, and a former Olympic hill as the race venue. The kids had a tough first day adapting to the terrain and conditions; however, on the second and third day they were reminded that they have the skill set and training mileage from Baldy to have success, which they found.
GS 1:
Women: Paige DeHart 1, Reece Walther-Porino 15
Men: Will Kogelmann 6, Drew Kogelmann 13
GS 2:
Women: Paige 1, Maya Lightner 3, Chloe Vogel 14
Men: Cole Curci 1, Drew Kogelmann 9
Parallel SL:

FREESKI
USASA Rail Jam/Slopestyle, Grand Targhee
By Gui Mattheis-Brown
The SVSEF Freeski Progression Team was in Grand Targhee, Wyoming, this weekend to showcase their skills in two events; rail jam and slopestyle. On a beautiful bluebird Friday afternoon, seven of our athletes took to the rail jam course. Barrett Beyer had a really strong showing and came out on top of the Grommet Boys division (8-9 years old). In the largest group, the Freeski Boys division (10-13 years old), Spencer Ferries gave it his all and narrowly missed the podium, ending up in fourth place.
Saturday’s competition was an interesting one; wind and snow made the slopestyle course tricky to deal with. Nonetheless, our skiers got after it and found their way onto the podium once again. Young Barrett Beyer overcame some serious slams in practice and on his first competition run, but he put it all together on his second run and came away with a gold medal in the Grommet Boys division. Inez Kraynick skied well and worked her way into second place in the Breaker Girls division (12-13 years old). Zeppelin Pilaro proved his consistency once again, taking home the bronze medal in the Menehune Boys division (10-11 years old).

Crystal Mountain National
SVSEF athletes competed at Crystal Mountain at an IFSA Junior National event. The weather held off, allowing SVSEF skiers to showcase their skills in the form of topnotch runs; every athlete who stayed on his or her feet during qualifiers made it into finals. In the finals, every SVSEF skier improved or kept their position. Addie Rafford, who has made the podium a number of times this season, took second place, and her brother Toby Rafford took third in his age class. Molly Kucher moved up from 12th to finish in the top 10, and Axel Diehl and Hunter Diehl both finished in the top 27% of a very large field.

ALPINE
Monroe Cup
SVSEF hosted the Monroe Cup, an annual event named for Lane Monroe, a champion of SVSEF and ski culture, and a longtime SVSEF coach. “We had an unbelievable Monroe Cup this past weekend,” said Alpine Race Coordinator Riley Berman. “For the first two days, which featured GS and slalom, we had ideal conditions for the age group in attendance (U12). On Sunday, we tried a new format with dual panel slalom, which was an extremely fun and spectator-friendly event. Thanks to all the volunteers, staff and families for coming together to make it one for the books!”
An upwards of 150 athletes competed throughout the weekend. Winning the overall Monroe Cup were two SVSEF athletes, Tucker Smith and Taylor Hovey. Tucker handily won the GS, completing the course over four seconds faster than the next competitor. He won the slalom by over two seconds. Tucker did not finish his second run in the dual panel slalom. Taylor won the girls’ GS and parallel slalom.
Joining Taylor in the top ten in the girls giant slalom were Josie Sarchett (6), Rowan Desler (7), and Emily Wright (10). Paxton Sammis had a stellar giant slalom race, joining Tucker on the boys' podium in third. In the girls' slalom, SVSEF again packed a good grouping into the top 10, with Emily Wright in fifth, Scarlett Carruth in eighth, Ella Shaughnessy in ninth and Simone Tumolo 10th. Ella Shaughnessy repeated her ninth place finish in the parallel slalom. Paxton Sammis and Jay Blackburn were top-10 for boys, skiing to second and 10th, respectively.
FIS, WR Elite Tech, Park City/Snowbird
FIS skiers have been competing at Snowbird and Park City, UT, in a Western Region Elite Tech series. A highlight of the weekend was a second place finish for Lily Fitzgerald in the first women’s giant slalom, in a field of 65 athletes. Sage Curtis was 20th in the same race. Maddie Ferris was 20th in the next day’s giant slalom. Lily Fitzgerald again led the women’s charge at Snowbird, placing eighth in the women’s first slalom. SVSEF had two in the top 20 in the next day’s slalom; Erin Smith had an impressive seventh place result, and Lily finished 11th.
Alum Spencer Wright, now skiing at Aspen, finished ninth in the men’s first GS at Park City. In the first slalom at Snowbird, Jack Smith was 16th and Spencer Wright 19th. Bridger Harrison had a solid slalom race the next day, skiing to 19th behind Spencer Wright in 18th.

SNOWBOARD
USASA Slopestyle, Grand Targhee
By Andy Gilbert
The SVSEF Snowboard Team travelled to Grand Targhee for the Big Mountain West Series Slopestyle event Feb 23rd. This was by far the best slopestyle course this season; the Targhee Park Crew did an amazing job, and it really showcased what the kids could do.
Menehune Boys 10-11
Nico Lerner landed in third place with smooth straight airs on the big jumps and use of the harder rail feature.
Breaker Boys 12-13
Sebastian Lerner took the win with his first run! He started with a nice 50/50 on the rail feature, moving into a backside 360 and two clean straight airs. Caleb Hothem took the bronze with clean straight airs and a good flow throughout his run. Jack Verhaeghe ended up in fifth, just having a little trouble with the conditions.
Breaker Girls 12-13
Olive Gilbert won the Breaker Girls division with nice tail grab and method airs.
Youth Men 14-15
Brody McBee was third with a nice 3 and solid straight airs.
Up next, the team goes to Park City for the King of the Wasatch series final. We will know which of our riders qualified for Nationals after this event.

CROSS COUNTRY
Devo, Prep, Prep Pro athletes at IYCs
Devo, Prep and Prep Pro athletes competed at the annual Intermountain Youth Championships, held at Trail Creek in Jackson Hole. The weekend featured a skate race, skiercross and a mass start classic. It was a great weekend for the team; it was the first away race for some of the SVSEF athletes, while for others it was a good opportunity to put all their hard work this season into practice in a competitive setting. SVSEF athletes accumulated a number of podiums throughout the weekend. Berkeley Canfield won the U14 girls skate race and skiercross; sickness set her back on Sunday, but she still skied to 12th and won the U14 Cup for the season (based on results at JNQ and IYC races). Sven Halvorsen was third for U12 boys in the skate race, Chasyn Halvorsen was first for U8 boys, and Zander Douglas found the podium in third for the U16 boys 5km. Sarah Leidecker had a solid race, finishing fifth for U12 girls, as did Zoe Liberatore, who was fourth for U10 girls, and Lucy Stevenson, who was fifth. In the skiercross event, Sarah Leidecker finished second for U12 girls, Sven Halvorsen was just off the podium in fourth for U12 boys, as was Berkeley Canfield for U14 girls. She was followed closely by Anika Vandenburgh in fifth. Remy de Saint Phalle and Zander Douglas also went four-five for U16 boys. In the mass start races on Sunday, Zoe Liberatore again finished fourth for U10s. Holden Archie finished 10th in both the skate and classic races, and ended up ninth overall for the U14 Cup for boys for the season. Teddy Hobbs had a stellar race, skiing to 17th for U14 boys in a field of 57. Anika Vandenburgh was 13th for U14 girls.

ALPINE
Arkoosh Cup
SVSEF hosted the 49th annual Arkoosh Cup at Rotarun, a dual event for local kids ages 5-12. Leila McGrew and Tommy Hovey were the overall winners. Both are U10 athletes; Leila had a final time of 24.1 seconds, and Tommy clocked in at 21.79 seconds. There was great turn out at the event, with 116 local skiers on course and plenty of family and friends to cheer them on.
USSA, Trudi Bolinder Memorial, Bogus Basin
U16 alpine athletes finished up racing at the Trudi Bolinder Memorial at Bogus Basin, an IMD qualifier. Highlights include a fourth and third for Jessica Blackburn, and four women in the top 10 for the super G on Monday, February 18. Jessica’s podium finish in third was followed by Hannah Ferris in seventh (she was also seventh in the super G the day before), Marit Kaiser tied for eighth and Anhwei Kirk in 10th. Nathan Gowe and Josh Blackburn went five and six in the first men’s super G. The next day, Josh was SVSEF’s top racer in eighth, followed by Nathan Gowe (10), Colin Hanna (12) and Nils Galloway (13).

CROSS COUNTRY
Comp, PG and Prep, JNQ, Bogus Basin
Going into the Bogus Basin JNQs, a number of SVSEF athletes had already secured qualification to Junior Nationals. There were a few kids out with illness, but by and large, the kids skied well again, with a number earning podiums and winning races on the weekend. Saturday was a classic interval start, and Sunday was a skate interval start.
A couple of SVSEF athletes had real breakthrough races, which ultimately helped them qualify for Junior Nationals. Sebi Radl-Jones had his best qualifier of the year on a really tough course. The freestyle races on Sunday were really tough, which we haven’t typically seen at Bogus; they had reconfigured the courses with more challenging terrain for these races. Tia Vontver also had a really good race. Tia has been super positive throughout all of her time on the cross country team – she’s a good teammate, a good hard worker, and she doesn’t get too rattled,” said Program Director and Coach Rick Kapala. “The course favored her, as she likes skating more than classic, she's a good climber, and she’s not super big, so the terrain gave her an opportunity to ski to her strengths.”
Ella Wolter, who had probably already secured a spot at JNs based on results at previous JNQs, was second in the 10km women’s skate race. She’s had good results the last few JNQs (Soho and the first day at Bogus), but it was impressive that she came back out and did it again. “She has never finished second in a JNQ in her career, and she did it in a tough field,” explained Kapala. “For her to be coming into race form in a really strong way right now is really good.”
Johnny Hagenbuch skied great all weekend, as did Sydney Palmer-Leger. Anja Grover came back from a tough weekend in SoHo and skied really strong races, securing a spot on the JN team. “It’s always nice to see kids find their form in this last push before JNs,” said Kapala. Hayden Halvorsen has been rebuilding his fitness after a tough start to season, and he won the first day’s classic race, which was great for him.
This was the third and final Intermountain JNQ. Twenty-one kids from SVSEF have qualified for Junior Nationals; this is the most we’ve ever had. Of 57 total Intermountain spots, SVSEF comprises over a third of those.
The team is now four weeks out from JNs, and is focused on training and keeping the stoke up. Younger SVSEF athletes who have been making progress in their skiing but who were not selected will be headed to BC championships from February 26-March 4 at Salmon Arm.
Sydney Palmer-Leger, who prequalified for JNs, will instead go to Europe to compete in OPA Cup finals. Having already competed in four JNs, OPA Cup finals are a good opportunity to get some more international racing under her belt.

FREESKI
Travel, RevTour and Aspen Open, Colorado
by Tyler Conway
Five SVSEF freeski athletes are currently in Colorado for the Toyota U.S. Revolution Tour and the Aspen Open. Athletes will compete on the X Games course and at Copper Mountain in the 22’ halfpipe; this is a good opportunity to compete at some great venues.
At the Rev Tour on Tuesday, Harper Mallet placed sixth in the Rev Tour halfpipe. Unfortunately, Ridge Dirksmeier could not put down a run in finals. Outstanding job goes out to the boys for making it to the finals with no halfpipe to train on at home or in the Intermountain Division.
At Aspen, Tuesday was the first day of practice, and the competition is fierce. The talent and the skill of the amateur athletes on the X Games course is impressive. Athletes have one more day of slopestyle, halfpipe and big air practice before competitions start on Thursday. Events run through Saturday. Ridge Dirksmeier, Harper Mallett, Will Griffith, Joey Markthaler and Charley Bingham will compete this week.

IMD, Jr. Intermountain Cup Super G Qualifier, Snowbasin
It was a tough weekend with lots of adversity from weather and the race organizer. As a whole we mostly had successes. It’s fun and affirming to have some of the top results but as a coach you want success for everyone on the SVSEF roster. I think each one of our athletes has a run or two they can hang their hat on last weekend. That’s the best we can hope for as we head into the last training block before the final qualifier.
SG 1 - Paige DeHart 1st, Maya Lightner 5th, Asia Angel 14th; Will Kogelmann 5th

Gui Mattheis-Brown joined the SVSEF coaching staff in the fall of 2018. With a master's degree in sport psychology, Gui came well-equipped to navigate the complexities of coaching young athletes in a high-risk, high-reward discipline. He certainly looks good on paper, but Gui's effectiveness with SVSEF has gone beyond his résumé. He is approachable, knowledgable and an exceptional role model and resource for the athletes with whom he works. Read more about Gui in the interview below.

What is your earliest memory of skiing?
Skiing down the bunny hill at Purgatory with my twin brother in hip harnesses.
Can you give a brief history of your experience with skiing?
I started skiing when I was 3 and fell in love with the experience immediately. I wore a green one-piece ski suit and jumped off of everything. I started competing at 14 years old, doing USSA slopestyle and halfpipe events throughout Colorado. I pursued my passion into college, eventually attaining my master’s degree in sport psychology, which came in handy when I decided to become a full time ski coach.

Did any aspects of skiing help prepare you for college/work/etc?
One of the greatest lessons that I learned from skiing is our innate human ability to overcome fear. Before you hit a big jump or drop in for a competition run, there is a strong feeling of fear and the butterflies really start to get going. But after you land the jump, or stomp your run, that fear suddenly dissipates. It is replaced with a sense of accomplishment, and more importantly, competence. There is a sense of efficacy derived from intent, mixed with a dash of recklessness that can be learned from extreme sports. I’d say this learned skill allowed me to really push myself academically and not worry about the “what if’s.”
Why did you major in kinesiology? Was this decision informed by your background in skiing?
I chose to major in kinesiology because I was injured a lot growing up, and spent plenty of time doing physical therapy. I think that PT’s are incredible people, and they help you heal not only physically, but also mentally. As I got further along in my studies, I realized my true passion was in the educational side of kinesiology, coaching and building strong bodies and minds.
What do you feel you gained from working in CO with the Hawks Freeride team? Is it applicable to what you do now with SVSEF?
To put it simply, I was able to learn about the other side of competitive skiing. Being an athlete you are very focused on your run and your immediate surroundings/stimuli. But being a coach for competitive skiers allows you to experience and learn about the coaching side. I was fortunate to work with great coaches and see how they operate. I have added bits and pieces to my coaching philosophy from my days working at Hawks Freeride, and still use them to this day.

When you started working at SVSEF, what did you see as your biggest goal? Challenge? How have you been working towards reaching/addressing those?
My goal has always been to make sure my athletes leave my team at the end of the year as better people than when I met them on the first day. I am big on developing not only competent skiers, but also strong people who will be successful with whatever they choose to do in life. My biggest challenge starting at SVSEF was just getting the hang of things, knowing how things operate around here. But I quickly found out how awesome SVSEF is and it didn’t take long at all to get acclimated. As far as reaching my goals, I make sure to talk to each athlete on my team every day that I have with him or her. Not only about skiing, but school, family, interests, etc.

What does one-on-one time at the Air Barn look like? How well does this typically transfer over to on-snow skills? How long would you say an athlete spends, approximately, on one trick?
One-on-one time at the Air Barn is a magical thing. Sessions can be catered to whatever feature/area the athlete desires. This can range from a first backflip on trampolines, to grinding rails on rollerblades, to launching into the airbag with skis. I have been lucky enough to work in action sports facilities before, and the benefit of being able to train high-risk maneuvers in a safe and controlled environment cannot be overstated here. The kinesthetic intelligence gained by repetition in the Air Barn on trampolines/ramps is invaluable when it’s time to go out on the hill and actually perform the maneuvers on snow. The athlete knows not only how to perform the maneuver, but is confident that it is not going to take more than a few attempts to successfully complete the maneuver. The time spent on one trick can vary, by the difficulty of the maneuver itself and the ability of the athlete. Something like a 360 can be learned relatively quickly (even as little as one Air Barn session, then performed on snow shortly thereafter), but something like a backflip may take days, weeks, or even months.
How have you integrated your master’s degree in sport psychology into your day-to-day with SVSEF?
In preseason training at the Air Barn, I slowly introduce mental skills that will benefit our athletes such as proper goal setting, imagery training, and self-talk. We slowly build upon these as the season progresses so the athletes are not only familiar with the skills, but they are properly equipped to handle adversity throughout the competition season. I monitor these skills often; for example, goals can be updated as an athlete progresses. The most important psychological tool, I feel, is self-talk, and I always check in with my athletes before attempting a new maneuver or hitting a new feature to make sure their heads are in the right place. I also monitor my own self-talk to remain aware of my thought process.
What do you feel like you get out of skiing personally (skills, benefits)?
I have loved skiing for as long as I can remember, and the freedom that I get from skiing is unmatched. Being on a mountain is a great place to detach for a while and return to our essence as humans. I gain a great sense of belonging from being able to connect with nature in such an exhilarating way.
What values do you most want to pass on to your athletes?
The most important value I want to pass on to my athletes would have to be accountability. Our words and intent only mean so much if we do not follow through. I think by establishing a routine and committing to something like a ski team, my athletes are able to build a good base upon which they can grow. Another value I want to pass on is gratitude. To remember what got us to where we are, to never take anything for granted. Embrace those around you and enjoy your time together.

What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is witnessing the excitement of an athlete when they learn a new trick. Every athlete responds in a different way, but the energy is always incredible! Also, being able to ski everyday is another solid benefit.
What are the challenges inherent in freeskiing?
First and foremost would have to be injury. It’s lurking around every corner and as a coach it is important to stay a few steps ahead. Being diligent and proactive is essential to help mitigate the massive risks that freeskiing pose. This challenge is never overcome, it’s a constant battle and it is important to learn and do as much as possible to help keep athletes safe.
A skier or person who heavily influenced you/made you want to be a coach?
I would say my coaches I had growing up, but not in the way you’d think. My coaches were awesome guys, but I feel they were lacking in some important areas as far as coaching. I am grateful for my experiences with them, and I have shaped my own coaching to make sure I can fulfill the needs of my job/team/athletes.
What advice would you give your athletes?
Don’t be driven by fear; don’t be afraid to take the leap. In life we will all be hindered by fear at one point or another, so remember to dream big and stay true to yourself, you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish.
What other job would you be doing if it wasn't what you do now:
Probably working as a carpenter.
How do you define success?
Success is the realization that your dreams are coming true through hard work and dedication.

Caleb has been with the team for several seasons and is a big part of our growing snowboard team family. He is always enthusiastic about being there and rarely misses a session.
This past week, Caleb was named the male winner of the Beverly Hay Snowboard Cup. This is SVSEF’s only dedicated snowboard award and is a big deal in our sideways world. Caleb showed up ready to go, with a plan and a great attitude all week. At one point, he said to his coaches, “I’m just riding lazy,” and then proceeded to adjust that and win both boardercross races on Friday at Dollar.
Not always the first name you hear on the result page, but on and off the hill Caleb has a huge heart and it is starting to pay off for him!

Isaac Burks is a fun kid! His voice is constantly ringing through the team with a lot of happiness. Isaac is always early and stoked to show up to practice. His best pal on MiniX, Alex, pushes him to new heights – like last weekend, when they launched the big jump at Dollar together. It takes a lot of courage to trust your friends when you have to straight line for 200 yards into a massive jump you have never done before. Thanks to the freeski progression athletes for guiding these guys safely. His voice after the massive straight air exploded upon hitting the transition smoothly. Big air runs in his family. Good job, Isaac, and stay happy.

If you take out U.S. Ski Team athletes and athletes who compete on the World Cup circuit, she’s second. Sammy is just 13 – with the success she’s achieved so far in the sport, she looks to have a long, promising road ahead. She is assertive, quick, smart in her skiing, and has an impressive level of body awareness and control. She is calm, cool and collected, to boot.
Sammy was invited to forerun the World Cup tomorrow at Deer Valley. The event features top U.S. and international freestyle skiers. “This is a pretty big deal, since it’s the FIS World Championships and there is usually a huge crowd in the finish area,” said head coach John Grigsby. “It’s going to be amazing to watch her push out of the gate on one of the gnarliest courses on the World Cup circuit. It’s a course Sammy has had pretty good luck on over the years; at divisional competitions, she was third last year, and first and second the year before (2017).”
Sammy is a two-sport SVSEF athlete; after she foreruns for freestyle, she will head over to Bogus Basin for two cross country JNQ races this weekend.
