Naomi displays proper fundamentals and is passionate for progression. She's a big motivator on the team; she encourages her teammates to be better, both vocally and in the way she rides. We're glad to have her on team!

Jack Broderson has been a great addition to the XC Prep Team this season. He manages to find positivity and fun in everything we do at Prep Team. Whether slogging up a hill in freezing temperatures or pushing himself out of his comfort zone on speedy downhills, Jack has smile on his face, as if every day at ski team is a new adventure. Never a complainer and eager to improve, he makes teaching fun and is an essential part of our team.

Dominic is new to SVSEF this year and has already impressed all the North Series coaches with his stellar attitude. After a big fall or when skiing something more challenging, Dominic never complains, he just quietly keeps working on his skiing. He is a great addition to any group because he supports his teammates and works hard every day. There have been a couple days when he has forgotten his equipment but that doesn’t stop Dominic from showing up the next day with a big smile. We love having Dominic on North Series and can’t wait to see how his skiing progresses throughout the season.

Cash Mintz proved to be a great teammate last weekend, when a fellow athlete was injured and the coach was farther down the run. Cash waited with his teammate until the Ski Patrol arrived. Peter is a 5th grader at the Community School. He is a very mindful athlete making good food choices, and always has a positive attitude. Peter is a second-year Mini Xtreme skier and is skiing very well this year. I think it is really great that he knows when to be cautious and when to send it. He represents Mini X well because he loves skiing off-piste and doing jumps. One particularly great thing about Peter as a teammate is that he is always looking out for his friends, which makes him a great role model for the team.

Peyton Sundberg competes on SVSEF’s Alpine FIS Team. When I think of Peyton, the word that comes to mind is consistency. Peyton steadily works at her craft day in and day out. Peyton does a phenomenal job with her conditioning, and that was noticeable immediately when we hit the snow in November! On snow, she diligently woks on her form and tactics. Peyton takes a lot of runs, and is determined to improve. She represents what we love to see from Alpine FIS athletes. He has spent countless hours working on it,and recently achieved his goal. Austin is a joy to have on the team, and sets a good example both in his training and in his everyday approach to life.

New to cross country skiing, this enthusiastic and infectiously happy girl decided to make her first try at skating at the Winterstart race last weekend. What an accomplishment! She is a kind teammate, up for a challenge and willing to try every day she comes to practice, on dry land or on snow. It is an honor to be around her bright and shining smile. There is no telling where Vivian might go when she sets her mind to it.

Rotarun Ski Area Invests in Community Winter Recreation with New Snowmaking Infrastructure

[et_pb_section fb_built="1" _builder_version="3.3.1"][et_pb_row _builder_version="3.3.1"][et_pb_column type="1_2" _builder_version="3.3.1" parallax="off" parallax_method="on"][et_pb_image src="http://sunvalleyskied.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Rotarun_50s_lift_sm.jpg" _builder_version="3.3.1"][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type="1_2" _builder_version="3.3.1" parallax="off" parallax_method="on"][et_pb_text _builder_version="3.3.1"]Rotarun Ski Area has been a community endeavor from the start. After World War II, it was used by locals who boot packed up and skied down. 1948 Winter Olympian Ann Janet Winn began using Rotarun as a site to teach Hailey kids how to ski, and in 1941 a group of locals constructed a tractor-and-pulley rope tow out of old farm equipment, marking the establishment of the ski hill. The ski area formally became a nonprofit in 1964, when the Arkoosh family supported the foundation of Rotarun Ski Club, Inc. For generations, area individuals and businesses have pulled together to improve and preserve Rotarun Ski Area as a place for the community to celebrate winter sport. From its inception, Rotarun’s mission has always been to provide affordable access to locals. Fueled by passionate volunteers, local businesses, organizations, and donors, Rotarun has worked its way into the hearts and minds of generations of skiers and riders. In the spirit of Rotarun’s roots, the community is once again rolling up its sleeves and investing in Rotarun to maintain its place as our “little mountain with a big heart” for the Wood River Valley.
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version="3.3.1"][et_pb_column type="4_4" _builder_version="3.3.1" parallax="off" parallax_method="on"][et_pb_text _builder_version="3.3.1"]Rotarun Ski Area is situated to undergo a number of long-anticipated improvements, intended to ensure its longevity and grow and develop its role in the community as a place to inspire recreation and access for youth and adults alike. Rotarun offers public skiing throughout the winter season, and the local nonprofit organization Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF) utilizes Rotarun Ski Area as a venue to both introduce children to winter sports through its Rota-Rippers and LASAR programs, and hone the skills of its elite-level skiers and riders.
Thirty years in the works, Rotarun is finalizing its initial phase of installing snowmaking. For the 2019/20 season, the nonprofit ski area will have snowmaking on the lower section of the hill, enabling Rotarun to establish a base of snow on the lower skier’s left of the mountain. There has been a significant amount of work done behind the scenes to ensure that the upcoming changes to the Rotarun property are appropriately scaled and engineered for the betterment of both the Rotarun Ski Area and the Sage Springs neighborhood.

The aspect of the hill and its consistently cold temperatures make it an ideal location. The vision has been to create a system that is both efficient and aligned with the local spirit of the area.
Through the incredible generosity of the Nancy Eccles and Homer M. Heyward Foundation, The Janice Seagraves Family Foundation, generations of Rotarun board members, and a great many others, we are ecstatic that this incredible community asset will continue to provide a place for all of us to enjoy the winter in an authentic and inspired way, for generations to come. This is a magnificent step forward to further inspire our winter-loving community.”
Other Rotarun Ski Area improvements include a design upgrade to the lodge, with a kitchen and bathroom remodel project to help with usability. McGrew is also working with The Hillside Ranch and The Sun Valley Garden Center to procure larger spruce trees, with the intention of placing them around the border of the property to improve overall aesthetics and better integrate the existing infrastructure.
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version="3.3.1"][et_pb_column type="4_4" _builder_version="3.3.1" parallax="off" parallax_method="on"][et_pb_image src="http://sunvalleyskied.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/rotarun_building.jpg" _builder_version="3.3.1"][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version="3.3.1"][et_pb_column type="4_4" _builder_version="3.3.1" parallax="off" parallax_method="on"][et_pb_text _builder_version="3.3.1"]
None of these endeavors would be remotely feasible without the generosity of time and resources from a number of community partners.

“We cannot say ‘thank you’ enough to our local supporters who believe in this ski hill, and its role in our community,” said McGrew. “Lunceford Excavation and Webb Nursery provided incredible donations to help with the significant and costly work required to remediate a mudslide we experienced last spring. Wilro Plumbing, Wood River Electric, Levatan Appliance, BC Builders, Ferguson Supplies, Sun Valley Rug and Tile, Mountain Land Design, and Idaho Lumber and Ace Hardware have all leaned in to make this lodge improvement project come to life for our kids and community. We are beyond thrilled!”

Rotarun is planning its annual family friendly New Year’s Eve event and hosting free community ski and ride sessions throughout the upcoming winter. Visit www.rotarun.org for more information and details on calendars, and ways to get involved.

We are once again able to offer a Thanksgiving project here at home for our alpine teams. We are excited for the “pre-season” mileage and high-quality training; we travel far and wide to find these types of training setups, but nowhere tops our own backyard.
Each group will have a different mix of gate/fundamental work based on the goals of the age class. Individual team plans will be provided by head coaches.
Based on conditions, the camp will be located on Upper and Lower College, 42nd street, and Lower River Run. The possibility of setting training environments (GS and SL gates, drills, fundamentals, etc.), on all of these trails is a dream come true from the skill acquisition point of view. We always begin the season looking for terrain that lends itself to establishing good habits and successful movement patterns. As with years past, the terrain plan is going to afford a world class training environment, with the added bonus of having the hill only open to our SVSEF groups and some visiting teams.
Dates:  The camp is November 23-27 (Saturday through Wednesday). The times and content of the sessions will differ based on the group’s goals.
IMD Team, USSA Team, FIS Cost:  $550 for all 5 days of the camp. ($85 for lift tickets and hill space per day, $25 admin event fee per day)  Athletes can sign up for individual days at $110 per day.
North Series: $440 for the entire camp. ($85 for lift tickets and hill space per day $25 admin and event fee per day). Athletes can sign up for individual days at $110 per day.

  • The camp will be Saturday/Sunday, Tuesday/Wednesday – (athletes will not ski on Monday due to coaches education). Sign deadline is Monday November 18th. Sign up on Ski Club Pro under “Camps & Trips”.  The sooner you sign up the better as we can staff the groups appropriately.

Historically this camp has been an incredible experience for athletes at every level.  We encourage our athletes to participate if they can. For some, there will be a few days of school missed, and we encourage you to plan ahead with teachers and secure solid academic footing going into this camp.
Once again Sun Valley Company is offering to wave the lift ticket and hill space fee to employee families with athletes (dependents) that will be participating in the camp. Those athletes will only be charged the $25 per day admin fee. Please look for a separate signup option in ski club pro if you qualify for this opportunity.

This is the final installment of Athlete of the Week for the 2018-2019 season.

SVSEF provides ski and snowboard programming to nearly 700 athletes in the Wood River Valley. Athlete of the Week is an opportunity to highlight individuals who embody the values championed by this organization; sportsmanship, citizenship, character, teamwork, creativity, passion and perseverance.

Ethan has been a crossover athlete, training with both the Alpine USSA team and with the Big Mountain team this season. He has been a role model athlete for both teams. Ethan has focused mostly on the big mountain side of competition this winter; a fifth place finish at Whistler in March secured his spot at the North American Championships at Kicking Horse this upcoming week (watch his runs here). I’m really proud of him, especially since he’s at the bottom of his age bracket, being 15 and skiing against older and more experienced athletes (his age group covers 15-18 year olds).

Jack has made large improvements on his skiing and jumping in the past weeks. Down at Rotarun, he has worked hard on his backflip so he can bring it to the snow next season. His dedication and work ethic have been a great example for his teammates. We are really excited to see him develop as a skier and athlete.

Falon has a great deal of passion for the sport of ski racing and her teammates. Through her consistent enthusiastic effort, she has shown a lot of progression throughout this season, and an affinity for speed. Falon found a passion for her speed through her excellent results at Schweitzer, and she is excited to continue that energy as we head to Mammoth, California as we will be racing downhill, super G, GS and slalom to finish out the season.

SNOWBOARD

USASA Nationals, Copper, March 31-April 4

3/31
SVSEF started off the week with Jack Verhaeghe competing in GS for Breaker Boys (12-13); he finished 16th overall.
4/1
Boys competed in slalom, and girls in halfpipe. For Breaker Boys, Jack Verhaeghe finished 19th. Nico Lerner took 12th for Menehune Boys (10-11). In the halfpipe, Olive Gilbert rode to 26th for Breaker Girls. Channing Curci and Maddie Hothem went eight and nine for Youth (14-15).
4/2
Jack Verhaeghe had a great day in the Breaker Boys (12-13) boardercross, riding confidently and smoothly; he advanced all the way to the semifinals in the biggest field of the entire event. Unfortunately, he just missed the transfer by one spot in third (top two advance). It was still his best ever finish in BX at Nationals – he was sixth for his age group.
Nico Lerner also made it to semifinals for Menehune Boys; he was riding with the spice and ready to race. There were some great heats on the way, and again in semifinals our SVSEF rider just missed moving on. Nico finished second in the consolation round, landing him in sixth place.
Notables:
Caleb Hothem 21st
Sebastian (Sea Bass) Lerner 39th
The ladies competed in slopestyle, and Channing Curci pulled down another top ten finish in eighth place. After a bobbled first run, she dusted off and had a full pull on her second go.
Olive Gilbert had a good first run, landing all her jumps and adding a backside 180 on one of the rail features – she ended up in 33rd in one of the biggest fields of the event.
4/3
Day four had the boys at slopestyle and the ladies in boardercross. Zoe Bacca rode strategically, making it through heats and into finals; she took the overall victory for the day and was named a national champion. Olive Gilbert, Maddie Hothem and Channing Curci also competed. Maddie made it into semifinals.

IMD, U14 WR Jr Champs, Big Sky, March 21-24

IMD athletes competed at Big Sky for U14 Western Region Junior Championships. Said Head Coach James Tautkus, “we are very proud of these athletes. They set lofty goals this year. Some achieved, some barely missed, and in Big Sky we mostly took advantage of a great opportunity to learn, grow, and build on experience for the year and years to come. Our depth on the IMD alpine team has great potential. Nothing comes easy, especially in ski racing, and I think these results prove that we are doing a good job preparing our athletes for the challenges ahead in this sport and in life.”
SVSEF had nine U14 athletes in attendance. Based on their results during this series, Paige DeHart qualified for U16 Nationals – she is the only female athlete from the Western Region to do so – and Maya Lightner qualified for Whistler Cup.

U14 Vail Divisional Project, Vail, March 28-31

Lowie Watkins, Ruby Crist, Faith Cooke and Will Kogelmann were invited to attend a U14 divisional project, part of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard pipeline. This was an opportunity for athletes to score points, and also to race out of the region for the first time. “It’s a new experience for the Intermountain Division, as it's the first time IMD has taken a team to this event,” said Alpine Program Director Will Brandenburg. “It was one of the more challenging GS venues they’ve raced on, so it was a really great learning experience for their development.”

U16 Nationals, Breckenridge, March 31-April 4

Ryder Sarchett started Nationals off right with the win in the men’s slalom. This was a repeat of last year, when he was also the national champion in slalom; back-to-back victories is an impressive feat. Nathan Gowe was 28th overall for men. In the women’s race, Dasha Romanov finished sixth, Marit Kaiser 14th and Jessica Blackburn 21st (third for first year U16s). Paige DeHart was the top U14 and 23rd overall.

IMD Backcountry Day

Lindsay Mann and Sun Valley Guides led a group of six alpine IMD skiers into the backcountry for a day of touring. They ventured into the Pioneers, skiing the ridgeline that parallels Hyndman Creek Road. The skinning conditions were tricky earlier in the day, which forced the group to switch to boot packing on their first lap. They covered 1600 vertical feet in their ascent, and the same for their descent. “All of the athletes had great attitudes and really embraced the team mentality of backcountry skiing,” noted Mountain Awareness Coordinator and USSA coach Lindsay Mann.

SVSEF hosted the annual Gary Black Jr. Memorial Race, named in honor of the late Gary Black Jr., a stalwart supporter of SVSEF and skiing culture. The race drew 110 athletes U14 and under, and skiers competed in a dual panel slalom on Greyhawk. “It was really fun and a great way to end the season,” said Alpine Program Coordinator and North Series Assistant Coach Josie Brownell. “We saw some amazing costumes and some fantastic skiing. It was a really energized group. Heather Black attended and said a few words in memory of her late husband, Gary Black Jr., for whom the race is named. Heather and Alpine Program Director Will Brandenburg helped announce and hand out awards from the race; it was a nice way to wrap up the season.”
Overall winners were Owen Walker and Eden Gardner.

FREESKI

Upcoming: USASA Nationals, Copper, April 5-10

SVSEF freeskiers leave for USASA Nationals, which follow on the tails of snowboard Nationals. Here's a preview from SVSEF skier Johannes Liaboe:
1. What event are you most looking forward to?
I’m really looking forward to the slopestyle and skier cross competitions. Slopestyle is not my strong suit (Yet) but it is a lot of fun.
2. How have you been preparing for Nationals?

I've been skiing with the team, but I am just pushing myself a smudge harder. I am still having fun and not getting too stressed out.
3. Are there any specific tricks you've been working on for Nationals?
I’m trying to learn cork 360s before, because it is a trick that looks easy but is actually very complicated because of the weird axis that you spin on.
4. Any goals for the week?
Just have fun and do my best – I know that I won’t win the slopestyle but I would like to show what I can do.
5. How do you keep calm and focused at big events like these?
I’m not really sure because I have never been to a high level competition for any form of skiing.
6. What makes freeskiing fun?
Freeskiing is fun for a lot of reasons, but I think that it comes down to two main reasons. The environment and the feeling you get after doing something new. Everyone on the team has an insane amount of energy and no one gets down when they can’t land a certain trick because they know that they will get it the next run.

Luke is one of our graduating seniors who has grown up through SVSEF. He has continued to pursue his passion for skiing; from devo to alpine to freestyle, his love for the sport resonates throughout his training. This past year came with many challenges coming off of an extremely successful competition season the year before. Luke was faced with a difficult situation of juggling his scholastics and intense training/competition schedule. He finished the season with some impressive results, placing 18th at Junior Nationals and 25th at US National Championships. We're really proud of Luke, his hard work and dedication, and what he's accomplished this season

Anika Vandenburgh, 13, Cross Country Prep Pro

Anika is a kind and spirited young lady who motivates her peers by setting an example. She’s small but mighty; when she puts her mind to something, she really commits to it, and always with a positive attitude.
A few weeks ago, she competed at Western States at Soldier Hollow. Although she is a U14, she decided to race as a U16 – she wanted a challenge and she wanted to see what she could do. That in and of itself was an accomplishment. Not only did Anika make this decision, but she rose to the challenge, and she did it with energy and grit as she always does. Post-race, having stuck with girls who were heads taller, she was ready to do it again. Anika has a go-after-it, positive attitude that her teammates really feed from, and it’s really cool to see.
