IMD Junior National Team Named at Sun Valley JNQ

Molly Maybach Wins U18/20 Classic Sprint at final home race

Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation hosted the third and final qualifier in the InterMountain (IMD) Cross Country Junior National Qualifier Series this weekend at Lake Creek, where more than 300 athletes representing 15 clubs from ID, MT, WY, and UT raced to earn their spot on the starting lines at the 2025 Cross Country Skiing Junior National Championships. The IMD Junior National Team was named at the conclusion of the event, with SVSEF ultimately earning eight confirmed and one alternate spot on the team.

Athletes compete at Junior Nationals as part of 10 divisional teams representing Alaska, Far West, Great Lakes, High Plains, InterMountain, Mid Atlantic, Midwest, New England, Pacific Northwest Ski Association, and Rocky Mountain. Each Division can bring up to 25 male and 25 female athletes spread across the U16, and U18/20 age groups.

SVSEF XC Team athletes who qualified for the 2025 Cross Country Skiing Junior National Championships include for the U18/20 age class, Molly Maybach, Cora Faye Scott, Mazzy Conners, Charlie St. George, Nick Gardiner, Whit Brown and alternate, Zach Quesnel; and in the U16 age class, Tait Boschen and Duncan Fryberger.

“It was awesome to see a ton of participation from our SVSEF athletes this weekend, as 80 Devo through Comp Team skiers put a bib on,” said Chris Mallory, SVSEF XC Comp Team Head Coach. “We always seem to attract a snow event when we host, and this year it gave the athletes a little extra challenge on the final day of racing at Lake Creek. There was a lot on the line for Comp athletes trying to qualify for Junior Nationals happening in two weeks, and it was great to see the team rise to the occasion.”

Saturday’s Classic Sprint races welcomed sunny skies and epic conditions at the world-class Lake Creek trails, while athletes racing in Sunday’s Freestyle Mass Start battled more challenging conditions with ongoing snow and flat light.

“Overall, it was a great weekend filled with exciting competitions, team support, community involvement, and a lot of great energy,” said Becky Flynn, SVSEF XC Cross Country Program Director. “It was nice to see our teams shine on our home courses. Lake Creek trails are challenging, and our athletes really poured their hearts and effort into every kilometer on the courses! Congratulations to all the teams that were part of it and thank you to our volunteers, our race crew, sponsors, and supporters who helped make the event so memorable for everyone who came to race.”

The Sun Valley Snowboard Team was in Grand Targhee this past weekend. Coach Eddie Sawicz took 5 athletes to compete in Slopestyle and Rail Jam events for the USASA Big Mountain West series.

During Saturday's Slopestyle event, Rory Gadhia put up a score of 73.33, taking 2nd in the Breaker Boys 13-14 group, lacing a frontside boardslide to fakie, switch boardslide, frontside 360 stalefish grab, backside 360 tail grab, and gap to lipslide on the final rail.

Charlie Theobald scored 71.67 in his second run, going 270 frontside boardslide, lipslide to fakie, cab 540, backside 360 mute grab, and gap to lipslide, taking home the 3rd place spot.

Other results from Saturday's Slopestyle event were Bixby Swanger placing 4th in the Youth Men 15-16 group. Karsen Miller took 1st and Uzzi Almaras took 2nd in the Junior Men 17-18 group.

Sunday's Rail Jam event saw Rory Gadhia take 3rd in the 11-14 Men's group, with Charlie Theobald and Bixby Swanger taking 4th and 5th respectively in the 15-22 Men's group.

Charlie Theobald also earned himself the Best Character Award during Saturday's Slopestyle event. The event organizers and judges took notice of his great attitude, positivity, and dedication to the sport during this season's events. This award was also accompanied by a brand new snowboard courtesy of Nidecker Snowboards.

"Everyone stood up their runs this weekend. Our athletes have been working diligently all season developing and progressing their skills on the jumps and steel (rails). Their hard work is paying off and watching them progress and become more technical is truly amazing!" noted Sawicz.

The team is preparing for their next events at Woodward Park City March 5th-7th.

28th Annual Monroe Cup Honors Legendary Coach Lane Monroe

2025 Monroe Cup Goes to SVSEF’s Alex Grant and MWSC’s Mia Anderson

The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation hosted the annual Monroe Cup alpine ski race at Rotarun Ski Area Feb. 22-23. Named after ski racing coach and legend Lane Monroe, the Monroe Cup brings nearly 200 U10, U12, and a handful of U14/U16 athletes from across the region to compete in this Intermountain Division (IMD) Qualifier event for the IMD Championships.

“We had a fantastic two days of racing at Rotarun!” said SVSEF Alpine U12 North Series Head Coach, Claudia Stern. “Racing there brings out some of the best skiing from our kids all around. What a perfect race venue!”

Monroe was the Program Director and Head Alpine Coach at SVSEF from 1970-1996, with a hiatus between 1973 and 1976 to serve as a U.S. Ski Team coach. From 1973-1974 Monroe was the Men's Special Teams coach and then the Head Women's Coach from 1975-1976. The Monroe Cup was first held in 1997 on Bald Mountain, and continued there until 2021 when it moved to Rotarun Ski Area to continue as a slalom-only event. This was the fifth year the event has been held at Rotarun.

SVSEF Alpine U12 North Series coaches Adele Savaria and Skip Merrick were coached by Monroe and both went on to compete for the U.S. Ski Team.

Monroe was on site to present the awards on Saturday. “It’s so great to have Lane show up every year for his annual Monroe Cup race to hand out the awards,” said Savaria. “He is so honored to have this race named after him and it’s always great to see his smiling face.”

Matt McNeal, who won the first Monroe Cup in 1997, handed out the awards on Sunday, while getting to watch both his son and daughter race this weekend.

The 2025 Monroe Cup featured two slalom races (four runs) on Saturday for the boys under mostly sunny skies with on-site race commentary by NBC Sports announcer, Steve Porino. The girls raced in snowy conditions for most of Sunday, but their spirits were high with lots of smiles and face glitter! Overall, the SVSEF Alpine U12 North Series and U10 Mini World Cup teams had strong showings with several podium finishes across the U10 and U12 age classes.

The competition was fierce, with athletes traveling to Rotarun from the North Series of the Intermountain Division including McCall Winter Sports Club (MWC), Jackson Hole Ski Club (JHSC), Bogus Basin Ski Education Foundation (BBSEF), Grand Targhee Ski and Snowboard Foundation (GTSSF), and Alyeska Ski Club (ASC).

At the conclusion of both races on Saturday, SVSEF’s Alex Grant was awarded the Monroe Cup for his second and first place overall finishes; and Mia Anderson from McCall Winter Sports Club (MWSC) won the Monroe Cup on Sunday with first and third place overall finishes for the girls.

Awards were presented to the top five finishers for each race in the U10, U12, and U14 age categories.

A Yeti, a Pickle, A Camel, and Scooby Doo meet at BCRD Quigley Nordic…

Cross Country Community rallies yet again for an epic day of fun for the kiddos

The stage was set for the annual Papoose Club Nordic Cup with clear skies, beautiful tracks, and slightly warmer temperatures for one of the best events of the season.

The music started at 8:23am on Saturday morning as we welcomed this year’s 2025 Nordic Cup, and it is always a great day when more than sixty kids put on a race bib (and some glitter) and ski as fast as they can while being shepherded around the course by our older skiers—this year dressed as a Yeti, a pickle, a camel, and Scooby Doo, among others.

We are grateful for the Papoose Club and BCRD as well as our community of parents, coaches and volunteers who help to put on this amazing event!

“The Nordic Cup has quickly become one of my favorite races of the year,” said Lexie Praggastis, SVSEF XC Devo South Head Coach. “The atmosphere at any Nordic race is unmatched in my (completely unbiased 😉) opinion and the Nordic Cup continues to set the bar for fun - a Yeti race, glitter, cookies, Papoose Club schwag, and the whole stadium counting down every race! It is such a joy to watch these skiers put into practice what we’ve been discussing all year. I want to thank John Reuter for all his work as Chief of Race, as well as our countless volunteers and coaches.”

Krista Gehrke, President of The Papoose Club, shared, “We are proud to partner with SVSEF to host the annual Nordic Cup at BCRD Quigley Nordic. What a fantastic day providing a free, fun-filled day of outdoor activity for the kids. Big thanks to our community for coming together to make this happen. Next up, Kindercup!”

Sammy Smith Third American at FIS Cross Country World Cup in Falun, Sweden

Fifth for Smith in Women’s Sprint Classic at 2025 Junior World Championships

Following her fifth place finish in the Women’s Sprint Classic at the 2025 FIS Cross Country Junior & U23 World Championships in Schilpario, Italy, SVSEF XC Gold Team and U.S. Cross Country Ski Team athlete Sammy Smith was called up to compete in this past weekend’s FIS Cross Country World Cup presented by Coop. Smith competed in the Classic Sprint and the Freestyle Distance 20 km Mass Start, held Feb. 14-16 in Falun, Sweden.

“It was great to see Sammy competing in Falun and being right in the mix,” said Peter Holmes, SVSEF XC Gold Team Head Coach. “She had a great sprint qualifier and made it as far as the quarter finals. She is one of the hardest working athletes I have ever seen. It is exciting to see that work pay off as the season continues and she has more opportunities to race.”

In the lead up to Falun, Smith competed in the Junior events at the Junior/U23 World Championships. Smith is currently a freshman at Stanford University, and this will be her final year as a Junior—she will move into the U23 class next season.

“Junior/U23 World Championships is one of my favorite events,” said Smith’s XC Gold Team Coach, Peter Holmes. “Being able to be there and work with Sammy has been incredible the last two years. This year we were both hoping for a lot and we’re really close to winning this sprint. Nonetheless, Sammy had some really good days that I’m super proud of. The waxing conditions were super tough, and myself, along with the rest of the tech team, worked super hard to provide the best skis possible for all the athletes. Unfortunately, sometimes it’s tough to compete with the waxing staff and budget of Norway. Next year Sammy moves into the U23 class and I have high hopes for her to find a lot of success not only at U23 world champs but in all her ski racing endeavors.”

SVSEF XC Gold Team's Jake Adicoff Pair Up for Gold at FIS Para-Cross Country World Championships

Friend and SVSEF XC Gold Team teammate Peter Wolter guides Adicoff to another gold

Representing both the U.S. Para Nordic Team and the SVSEF XC Gold Team, Jake Adicoff brought home two gold and one silver medal from the 2025 FIS Para-Cross Country World Championships held Jan. 12-14 in Toblach, Italy.

Adicoff was joined by SVSEF XC Gold Team teammate Peter Wolter as his guide to win the gold in the 20 km Freestyle Mass Start (VI) and by Bridger Ski Foundation (BSF) Pro Team athlete Reid Goble to win gold in the 10 km Classic Interval Start (VI) and silver in the Mixed Sprint Relay.

“There is something special about the 2025 Para Nordic World Championships,” said Becky Flynn, SVSEF XC Program Director. “Not only did Jake ski away with three medals in the Visually Impaired (VI) category, his teammate and friend Peter Wolter was able to be part of it all. The idea to have Peter guide Jake just made sense. It is so rewarding to see them work together as teammates and win on the biggest stage in the world!

Wolter and Adicoff grew up together in the Wood River Valley through the SVSEF Cross Country Program and are now racing and training with the SVSEF XC Gold Team.

“I knew that Jake was a seriously good skier, but on his way to winning Friday’s skate 20k at Para World Champs in Toblach, Jake was on a new level,” said Peter Wolter, SVSEF XC Gold Team. “The opportunity to guide is pretty cool because it’s the closest we get to making cross country skiing a team sport. The Jake and Peter duo seems to work quite well on the race course given that we’re nearly always training together throughout the year on and off the snow, all over the world, with the SVSEF Gold Team.”

Wolter and Goble also race with their respective teams on the National and International cross country skiing circuits.

“Being at world champs with Jake, Peter, and Reid was a great experience,” said Peter Holmes, SVSEF XC Gold Team Head Coach. “It was great to be there to support them with coaching and ski support. It’s nice to be able to wax for people who you spend a lot of time with because you really start to understand their ski preference and their ski fleet. Having the right skis is important for winning races. Working with Tamer and the other staff was great and we were able to set the athletes up with the right tools to be successful. Can’t wait for the rest of Jake and Peter’s races together this season!”

Coming up for Adicoff and Wolter is the 2025 FIS Nordic World Championships in Trondheim, Norway, where they will compete in the Para Cross Country Sprint race on March 4-5. The qualifier will be held on March 4 and the rounds on March 5.

SVSEF Big Mountain Team Makes Their Mark at Snowbasin IFSA Junior Qualifier

Addi Featherman, Fleur Brazil, and Anna Yuras sweep V1 U19 Women’s Ski Podium

The SVSEF Big Mountain Team traveled to the International Freeskiers and Snowboarders Association (IFSA) Jr 2* V1 & V2 held Feb. 8-9 at Snowbasin, UT, and weather aside, it was a strong trip for the team.

“The weather was variable on Saturday during our Volume 1 competition,” said Catie Reed, SVSEF Big Mountain Coach. “Our U19 Women swept the podium that day, with two of our first-year Big Mountain athletes securing second and third place. Unfortunately, they only made it through a few U19 Men's competitors on Saturday before calling off the comp for the remainder of the day due to poor visibility, so our U19 Men did not get the opportunity to showcase runs that day.”

Sunday the sunshine peaked through for a few hours in the morning, making for a gorgeous setting for the course inspection and warm-up. By the time U19 competitors dropped into the  start, the clouds and flat light had rolled back in.

“The visibility remained manageable throughout the afternoon,” said Reed. “All of our SVSEF athletes laced some incredible runs and we brought home second place in both U19 Women's Ski, and U19 Mens Ski!”

34th Annual Laura Flood Memorial Race Rallies Alpine Ski Racing Community

JHSC’s Taryn Moe and Rowmark’s Cree Gilmour Take Overall Series Titles at the Laura Flood

The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF) welcomed more than 150 U16 ski racers from across the Western Region for three days of racing to earn qualifying points towards the national championship. One slalom and two giant slalom races were held Feb. 8-10, having shifted to Saturday through Monday when heavy snowfall required pushing the schedule back by a day.

The Laura Flood Memorial holds a special place in the heart of our local ski racing community. Flood passed away in a ski training accident at 19 while racing for the University of Colorado. Her kind-hearted nature and passion for skiing is remembered by her family and the greater Sun Valley ski community, and those who knew Laura would say that she was vivacious, kind, super determined, fun-loving, and always showed the epitome of sportsmanship.

“Another amazing race series this year!” said Heather Flood Daves, Laura’s sister. "Such fantastic skiing by all the athletes on the new World Cup venue! They showed perseverance and grit in dealing with challenging weather conditions and supported all their fellow racers and teammates, exemplifying good sportsmanship and solidifying friendships throughout the Western Region. This is the true heart of ski racing! It is also exciting to see the successes of the Sun Valley athletes—congratulations to them!"

New this year, Saturday evening featured an awards ceremony for the first day of racing held at the Sun Valley Opera House with free pizza and a screening of the Rogue Lines documentary for the athletes, coaches, and families. “Saturday night was really special to bring everyone together,” said Flood Daves. “It’s one way we can continue the tradition of strong ski racing here in Sun Valley and how the sport can have a special way of building community. I truly appreciate how much work SVSEF and the Sun Valley Race Crew put in to put on this series at such a high level year over year.”

“The Laura Flood marks a proud moment for the coaches, parents, and staff that support the kids on their progressive journey through ski racing,” said Will Brandenburg, Chief of Race. “The series provides strong competition for the U16 athletes to see where they are at this point in the season ahead of regional and national championships; and it’s also a really fun event that brings together so many in the ski racing community—the Flood family, coaches, volunteers, families, athletes, and the Sun Valley Resort staff all contribute a tremendous amount of time and energy to make this a really special event for all involved.”

Chase Josey Takes 2nd Overall at Mt. Baker’s 36th Legendary Banked Slalom

SVSEF’s Naomi Gorringe and Vivian Smith slay their first ride at the famed event

SVSEF Snowboarding Program Director and Coach Andy Gilbert hit the road this past weekend to Mt. Baker to meet up with Chase Josey and two up-and-coming juniors from the SVSEF Snowboarding Futures Team—Naomi Gorringe and Vivian Smith. They were all there to compete in the 36th Legendary Banked Slalom, held Feb. 7-9.

Josey, a two-time Olympian, SVSEF alum, and member of the 2024/25 U.S. Snowboarding Halfpipe Team, rode fast and furious to a second overall finish in the Pro Men—just .09 seconds out of first place. In their first trip to the famed Legendary Banked Slalom, Gorringe and Smith rode their way to fifth and sixth in the Junior Girls division respectively. Andy Gilbert landed a top ten finish in the Grand Masters division.

Entries alone are hard to come by for the event—they are either earned through pro rider invitation, top results at a specific few qualifying events, or those lucky few win a lottery spot to jump into the contest. Josey returned as an invited rider among the Pro Men. Gorringe earned her spot through her strong performance and win at the recent Baldy Banked Slalom, and Smith was one of the lucky ones to snag a lottery entry. Gilbert carried over his 2024 entry to this year.

The “Baker Banked” made its much-welcomed return this year after being cancelled in 2024 when warm weather and rain caused the Mt. Baker Ski Area’s snow base to recede by 14 inches in just a few days. The course crew had their work cut out for them this year with 41″ of new snow in the days leading up to the event.

“I couldn’t be more proud of and stoked for our young riders, Naomi and Vivian, for jumping into the Baker Banked—it truly is a legendary event and an opportunity to learn and ride amongst so many of the best in the sport,” said Gilbert. “The snowboarding culture is just amplified at Baker—and for us to share this experience all riding there on our own—and with one of the greatest mentors our young riders could ask for in Chase—these are the opportunities and memories that last a lifetime and help athletes grow through the sport they love so much.”
