Caleb has been with the team for several seasons and is a big part of our growing snowboard team family. He is always enthusiastic about being there and rarely misses a session.
This past week, Caleb was named the male winner of the Beverly Hay Snowboard Cup. This is SVSEF’s only dedicated snowboard award and is a big deal in our sideways world. Caleb showed up ready to go, with a plan and a great attitude all week. At one point, he said to his coaches, “I’m just riding lazy,” and then proceeded to adjust that and win both boardercross races on Friday at Dollar.
Not always the first name you hear on the result page, but on and off the hill Caleb has a huge heart and it is starting to pay off for him!

Isaac Burks is a fun kid!  His voice is constantly ringing through the team with a lot of happiness. Isaac is always early and stoked to show up to practice. His best pal on MiniX, Alex, pushes him to new heights – like last weekend, when they launched the big jump at Dollar together.  It takes a lot of courage to trust your friends when you have to straight line for 200 yards into a massive jump you have never done before. Thanks to the freeski progression athletes for guiding these guys safely. His voice after the massive straight air exploded upon hitting the transition smoothly.  Big air runs in his family. Good job, Isaac, and stay happy.

Taylor has made tremendous progress in his skiing. He is a dedicated athlete both in the gym and on the snow. His quirky sense of humor, curiosity for the sport, and willingness to support his teammates are all a huge bonus for the USSA Team.

If you take out U.S. Ski Team athletes and athletes who compete on the World Cup circuit, she’s second. Sammy is just 13 – with the success she’s achieved so far in the sport, she looks to have a long, promising road ahead. She is assertive, quick, smart in her skiing, and has an impressive level of body awareness and control. She is calm, cool and collected, to boot.

Sammy was invited to forerun the World Cup tomorrow at Deer Valley. The event features top U.S. and international freestyle skiers. “This is a pretty big deal, since it’s the FIS World Championships and there is usually a huge crowd in the finish area,” said head coach John Grigsby. “It’s going to be amazing to watch her push out of the gate on one of the gnarliest courses on the World Cup circuit. It’s a course Sammy has had pretty good luck on over the years; at divisional competitions, she was third last year, and first and second the year before (2017).”

Sammy is a two-sport SVSEF athlete; after she foreruns for freestyle, she will head over to Bogus Basin for two cross country JNQ races this weekend.

SNOWBOARD

USASA Big Mountain West Series, Dollar Mountain, Sun Valley

By Andy Gilbert
The SVSEF snowboard team hosted the Beverly Hay Snowboard Cup in conjunction with the USASA Big Mountain West Series.
Events began Thursday, Jan 31 with two boardercross events in Sepp’s Bowl at Dollar Mountain. Standouts on the day were Zoe Bacca taking a couple of wins in the youth women’s 14-15 group, and Nico Lerner was on the podium in first, as well, for menehune boys (10-11).
Friday’s boardercross events counted towards the Beverley Hay Cup, named for our biggest and longest standing supporters of the snowboard team. This is a combined trophy with scores from Saturday’s slopestyle event.
Zoe Bacca did it again with a pair of wins, and Caleb Hothem (breaker boys, 12-13) took down the field all day to score two golds. Other standouts were Olive Gilbert with a pair of wins in the breaker girls 12-13, Brody McBee with a silver in the youth men 14-15, and Maddie Hothem with a pair of silvers in the youth women’s group.
Saturday’s weather remained enough at bay to get the slopestyle events off, and the kids put on a great show. Jack Verhaeghe landed in third for breaker boys with a nice 720. Channing Curci took home the gold in the youth women’s group using the big jump line and good style on her method air to take the win.

The Beverly Hay Cup was awarded to:
Channing Curci: First in slopestyle and two bronzes in BX
Caleb Hothem: fifth in slopestyle and two firsts in BX
This award has been given out since 1999, and past winners include Olympian Graham Watanabe and Olympic Gold Medalist Kaitlyn Farrington.

Sunday wrapped up the week with a rail jam event, and Channing Curci, fresh off her cup win, took the gold in the youth women’s division. Great events, high energy and well attended!

FREESKI

USASA Big Mountain West Series, Dollar Mountain, Sun Valley
BY Tyler Conway
The SVSEF freeski team dominated USASA slopestyle, rail jam and skiercross events at Dollar Mountain over the weekend. Slopestyle is the highlight of the weekend, where athletes can show off their high flying acrobatic and rail sliding skills on skis. Athletes get two runs and are judged on overall impression and performance. Run are scored 1-100. Taking top in the slopestyle open class was Charley Bingham, and his teammate Harper Mallett was on his heels in third. SVSEF athletes also boasted impressive performances in all age class divisions. Ben Fethke was first for 12-13 year olds, and scored a 99 – a nearly perfect run and the highest score of the day. Walker Woodring was first (8-9), Ridge Dirksmeier second (14-15), Kyle Kope third (16-17), Inez Kraynick third (12-13), Zeppelin Pilaro second (10-11) and Alex Leahy third (10-11.
The skiercross course did not slow down freeski athletes Johanes Liaboe, Ben Fethke and Walker Woodring, who took home gold.
The rail jam open class first place went to Harper Mallett; also taking home gold in their age classes were Ben Fethke and Walker Woodward.

ALPINE

North Series, Cranston Cup, Bogus Basin

Two slalom races were scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, but Sunday’s event was cancelled due to unsafe conditions. It was a great weekend for our team despite the rain, snow, sleet, and wind. SVSEF girls are looking really solid as a group this season; they took six of the top 10 spots in Saturday’s race. Josie Sarchett finished first, and teammate Taylor Hovey was two seconds behind in second. Rowan Desler (fourth), Norah Davis-Jeffers (fifth), Emily Wright (seventh) and Simone Tumolo (eighth) rounded out the top 10. Tucker Smith was first for boys, and Paxton Sammis was seventh. SVSEF’s Tucker Smith and Josie Sarchett each won the Cranston Cup for the weekend. The cancelled race will be picked up on the weekend of the Monroe Cup.

CROSS COUNTRY

Boulder Mountain Tour and Half Boulder, Ketchum

A number of SVSEF skiers, past and present, competed in the Boulder Mountain Tour and the Half Boulder. It was a sprint to the finish for the top elite athletes after 34km of racing; Gold Team skier Peter Holmes won with a time of 1:22:21.9, and Comp skier Johnny Hagenbuch was third, just 1.2 seconds back from the winning time. Matt Liebsch of Minnesota finished second. Former Gold Team skier Rogan Brown was fourth for men, and Adam Luban (Gold Team) was sixth.
The women’s finish was also a nail-biter. Gold Team skier Katie Feldman narrowly missed the win for women, finishing a tenth of a second behind Erika Flowers of Bozeman. Mary Rose (former Gold Team skier and current SVSEF Comp coach) was fourth, Comp coach Sloan Story was sixth and Gold Team skier Maddie Morgan was seventh. Devo coach Brooke Hovey was also in top 10 for women in ninth.
SVSEF athletes competed in the 15km Half Boulder, which began at Baker Creek and meandered south to the same finish at the SNRA. Comp team athlete Jake Gorham was third overall, finishing in 44:33.6. Prep team skier Teddy Hobbs was fifth overall, and teammates Dexter Morrison and McCallan Campbell were sixth and seventh.

CROSS COUNTRY

Comp/Gold, U23/Junior World Championships, Lahti

The biggest news of the week from U23 and Junior World Championships racing in Finland involved SVSEF’s own Johnny Hagenbuch, who, with teammates Ben Ogden, Luke Jager and Gus Schumacher, won the men’s U20 4x5km relay event on January 26. This was a historic accomplishment; it was the first time the U.S. has won the relay at World Junior Champs. The relay was mixed, with two classic legs followed by two skate; Johnny skied the third leg. The team completed the race in 45:34.7, beating Russia by 3.8 seconds. Johnny also had a great individual effort two days before, skiing to 17th in the men’s 30km classic mass start.

Also racing for the U.S. in the relay was Sydney Palmer-Leger, who also skied the third skate leg in the 4x3.3km competition. Sydney’s team just missed the podium, finishing 40.5 seconds behind Norway’s winning team. She also skied a solid race four days prior, coming in 20th in the 5km skate. Teammate Sophia Mazzoni skied the women’s 15km classic mass start on 1/24, finishing 48th.

Peter Holmes represented SVSEF and the U.S. for U23s. Following his 27th place finish in the 1.6km classic sprint, he was 48th in the 15km skate on 1/23 and 33rd in the 30km classic mass start on 1/25.

Gold Team, SuperTour, Lake Placid

The Gold Team and PG athlete Scott Schulz continued racing on the SuperTour circuit, traveling to the East Coast for three races at Lake Placid: a distance skate, classic sprint and classic mass start. In the women’s 5km skate, Katie Feldman finished in the top 10 in ninth. Cate Brams was 23rd and Maddie Morgan 29th. Adam Luban was 13th in the men’s 10km race, and PG Scott Schulz was 17th. All three SVSEF women made heats in the classic sprint the next day; Katie Feldman and Maddie Morgan both made it into semifinals, where Katie finished fifth in her heat and Maddie sixth. Adam Luban and Scott Schulz also made heats for men, but were knocked out in quarterfinals. The final day of racing was a 10/15km mass start classic. Katie skied a strong race, finishing eighth in the field of 84 racers. Cate also had a good race; she finished 13th overall. Maddie Morgan was 25th. In the men’s 15km, Adam was 13th and Scott 16th.

Max Durtschi, IBU World Cup, Antholz

SVSEF alum Max Durtschi continued racing on the IBU World Cup circuit for biathlon. He finished 62nd in the 10km sprint in Antholz, Italy, on January 25th; he was the third American finisher.

FREESTYLE

SVSEF athletes had an opportunity to compete on their home turf at the Sun Valley Freestyle Spectacular. Sun Valley hosted a great event on Roundhouse slope, with two moguls events and one duals. Highlights from the weekend included Sammy Smith taking the win in all three events for women, Luke Rizzo skiing to second in the second moguls event, and Rainey Wilson finishing sixth for women on day one. SNOWBOARD

Snowboard Team, USASA Slopestyle, Snowbasin

By Andy Gilbert

The Snowboard Team made its first road trip of the year to compete in the USASA Big Mtn. West Series slopestyle at “Sun Valley South” – Snowbasin Resort.

The team traveled 10 riders to take part in the event. Standouts included Jack Verhaeghe in the Breaker Boys 12-13 group, throwing a Half Cab into a smooth frontside 360 and using the more difficult rail feature to end up in 2nd place. Channing Curci also used the bigger jump line on the course in the Youth Women group 14-15. A nice method air and good style also put her in 2nd place, followed by Maddie Hothem in 3rd with a nice rail section on her runs.

Chase Josey Fourth at Aspen X Games

Alum Chase Josey competed in the men’s superpipe event at the Aspen X Games, following a hip strain at the Laax Open in Switzerland. Despite this, Chase finished fourth overall, behind Scotty James, Yuto Totsuka and Danny Davis. He scored a 82.66 on his third and best run. Chase next competes at the 2019 World Championships in Park City.

FREESKI

Freeski Progression, USASA events, Snowbasin

By Gui Mattheis-Brown

The SVSEF Freeski Progression Team traveled to Snowbasin, UT, this weekend to compete in two USASA events; slopestyle and rail jam. On Saturday, eight of our athletes took to the rails and jumps to showcase their ability. In the Grommet Boys division (8-9 years old), we had Walker Woodring take the gold medal with a very solid run, and Barrett Beyer right behind him in second with a strong showing as well. Anton Holter placed first out of 12 athletes in the Breaker Boys division (12-13 years old), with George Corkery narrowly missing out on the podium.  Zeppelin Pilaro came in 3rd place in a very competitive group (10-11 years old).

Sunday’s competition produced some more podiums for the Freeski Progression Team, the sun was shining as the athletes took to the rail jam course. Barrett took home the gold in the 9 and under age group, while Zeppelin ended up on top of the podium as well in the 10-13 age group.

Summit County Colorado Camp

Freeski athletes spent a week in Colorado, taking time to focus on skills and technique in the halfpipe and terrain parks. See the edit from the week here:

BIG MOUNTAIN

Big Mountain athletes took to Jackson Hole and Snowbird for a second consecutive weekend of competition, with 22 athletes in total on the road. It was a big weekend for the team, with success across the board: at Snowbird, SVSEF had six males in the top 10, all four females who competed on Sunday broke the top eight, Maile Dorland took home first place for her age group both days, Fletcher Stumph earned second on day one and Toby Rafford skied to third on day two. At Jackson, Brian Heekin finished third in the 15-18 age group, and the two other athletes from the SVSEF contingent gained a lot of valuable experience from the competition.

Athlete of the Month, December: Cross Country Comp Team

The focus when it comes to results is quite consistently on the individual athlete. It is a logical inclination, given the nature of the sports that are offered through SVSEF programming; from snowboardcross competitions to GS races to skate sprints, it’s the athlete’s time or technical proficiency alone that counts. While Athlete of the Month is a platform to highlight skiers and riders who have achieved results-based success, it behoves us to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. The aggregate of top results recently amassed by cross country athletes as a team warrants recognition of the program’s overarching strength; this is the reason why our Athlete of the Month is not an individual, but the entire Cross Country Comp Team.

As of mid-January, SVSEF athletes have competed at three major events, both regionally and nationally. At each of these events, they have featured prominently at the top of the result lists. At the first JNQ, SVSEF secured over half of the podiums for the weekend. Across the country at U.S. Nationals at Craftsbury, top finishes resulted in four SVSEF athletes earning spots at Junior and U23 World Championships. SVSEF again nabbed a large number of podiums at the super qualifier at Soldier Hollow on January 18-19, which featured large fields of competitors, not just from the Intermountain region, but from all over the west.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row make_fullwidth="on" _builder_version="3.3.1"][et_pb_column type="1_2" _builder_version="3.3.1" parallax="off" parallax_method="on"][et_pb_text _builder_version="3.3.1"]
In years past, SVSEF cross country skiers have certainly garnered significant results. This season, though, the range is especially impressive. “This year, in particular, we just have athletes in almost every age category who could likely podium or ski in the top ten at Junior Nationals,” explained comp team head coach Ashley Knox. “Other years, we might have a couple of really strong age groups, but not across the board. And some years, like this one so far, all the pieces fall into place better than others.”

Knox acknowledges that success for the cross country program is, at least in part, rooted in the influence of its younger teams. “I really think the success at the Comp Team level speaks to the growth and strength of our Devo and Prep programs,” said Knox. “The addition of the Prep Pro and Prep summer training has really upped the level and ability of skiers moving up to comp team. Instead of having the majority of our move-ups being new to summer training and roller skiing, they come to comp team already competent at roller skiing, and with an understanding of the importance of summer training.”

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version="3.3.1"]
Also playing a major factor is the volume of time spent together, and the mutual respect and work ethic that are widespread amongst this group. The Comp Team offers team training 44-46 weeks out of the 48 weeks of the calendar year, with athletes logging an average of 10 hours a week. Training in the spring is lighter, and builds through the summer and into the competition season. Kids can end up in close quarters, as they do on the Haig glacier and on competition trips, and they ultimately spend a significant number of hours together on the trails, on the road and in the gym. Knox explained the team’s approach to cultivating an environment in which support, respect and drive take form naturally:
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version="3.3.1" max_width="76%" module_alignment="center"]

We have always made a point of building a program based on mutual respect and holding ourselves to a high standard for who we are as individuals and a team. The athletes all know they are in a hard sport and understand it takes countless hours of dedicated hard work, and I think most know it is much more enjoyable with teammates. Many of these skiers spend more time with each other, both inside and outside of training, than they do with their families, which makes ski team almost a second family and the hut a second home. And as much as everyone wants success for themselves, they want it for each other too. So whether it’s pushing each other during intervals, doing school work together on a race trip, or hugging at the finish line, they are usually there to support and push each other.”
[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built="1" fullwidth="on" _builder_version="3.3.1"][et_pb_fullwidth_image src="https://svsef.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/summer.jpg" _builder_version="3.3.1"][/et_pb_fullwidth_image][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built="1" _builder_version="3.3.1" custom_padding="3px|0px|0|0px|false|false"][et_pb_row custom_padding="27px|0px|0|0px|false|false" _builder_version="3.3.1"][et_pb_column type="4_4" _builder_version="3.3.1" parallax="off" parallax_method="on"][et_pb_text _builder_version="3.3.1" custom_margin="-26px|||"]

An organic mentorship system also lends itself to the cross country program’s success. “The PGs add depth and variety to the training group – they train and travel with the Comp Team often,” said Knox. “The Gold Team shows the younger athletes what is possible. Our most recent example is Kevin Bolger. He made the U.S. Ski Team and is currently skiing on the World Cup and posting some good results. This summer, Johnny Hagenbuch was jumping into some training sessions with Bolger. Pretty cool to have that connection.”

With 211 of SVSEF’s 695 enrolled athletes, it’s expected to find some snippets of success in the cross country program. What stands out, however, is how widespread the success has been so far this season, and how the team dynamic, from the ground up, has lent itself to both individual and group success.

HIGHLIGHTS

Bozeman JNQ:

The JNQ season opener at Bozeman was both a nod to the base SVSEF cross country skiers have steadily built over the past eight months, and an indication of good things to come. Prep, comp and PG athletes raced December 22-23 at Bozeman for the first of three Intermountain region JNQ qualifiers. SVSEF athletes were constantly on the podium; Johnny Hagenbuch won the men’s U18 freestyle mass start, and PG athletes Scott Schulz and Adam Witowski were first and second for U20s. Bjorn Halvorsen also secured a win in the U16 age class. For U18 women, Sydney Palmer-Leger took the win, followed by Sophia Mazzoni in second and Anja Jensen in fourth. Lily Brunelle was the third U20, followed by Heidi Booher in fourth and Sarah Morgan in fifth. U16 women swept the podium, with Logan Smith in first, Sammy Smith second and Anja Grover third. All told, SVSEF took 10 of 18 podium spots for U16-U20 classes; over half of the kids standing on the podium throughout the weekend were wearing the SVSEF suit.

Nationals:

The team’s momentum continued into the new year at Nationals. Top professional, collegiate and junior athletes from across the country converged for classic sprints and classic and skate distance races. Johnny Hagenbuch was the top U18 in the nation in the classic distance race. On the women’s side, Sydney Palmer-Leger was the top U18 female in the classic distance race, as was Logan Smith for U16s. Peter Holmes stepped onto the American podium in third for the men’s classic sprint. He was fourth overall and the first U23. Sophia qualified for women’s senior heats and was the second junior overall, and Logan Smith also qualified for senior heats as a U16. Sydney Palmer-Leger skied to second in junior heats, Sarah Morgan to fifth and Johnny Hagenbuch to fifth. In Sunday’s mass start, Johnny Hagenbuch again won his age group, this time in the men’s 10km freestyle race. PG skier Scott Schulz broke the top 10 in ninth. Sydney Palmer-Leger made the junior women’s podium in third for the 7.5km, and Logan Smith was 15th and the top U16 finisher.

National-level accolades:

Aside from overall titles, athletes competing at Nationals were looking to qualify for race opportunities abroad. A record number of SVSEF athletes did so; Peter Holmes, Johnny Hagenbuch, Sydney Palmer-Leger and Sophia Mazzoni all made the cut for U.S. World Junior Championships in Lahti, Finland, which are currently taking place. SVSEF has often had one or two (and twice, three) athletes qualify for World Juniors, but four is unprecedented. In addition to the four who qualified for Junior Worlds, Comp Team athlete Logan Smith had a standout series. At just 14 years old, Logan pre-qualified for Junior Nationals, and also qualified for the U18 Nordic Nations Cup in Scandinavia. She was also the second alternate for Junior Worlds, based on her results at Nationals.

These four athletes aren’t the only SVSEF skiers representing the organization in Europe. Gold Team skier Kevin Bolger has been competing on the World Cup circuit as a member of the U.S. National Team; he was named last spring following success domestically as well as in his first World Cup competition (he placed 11th overall in a freestyle sprint in Lahti last season). He has recorded some solid results for his first season racing full-time in Europe; Kevin qualified 13th in Toblach in the skate sprint, and finished 21st overall.

CROSS COUNTRY

Super JNQ, Soldier Hollow, Utah

SVSEF cross country skiers competed at Soldier Hollow in Midway, Utah, January 18-19, as part of a super qualifier. All five divisions from the west (Rocky Mountain, Pacific Northwest, High Plains, Far West, Intermountain) were represented, and around 750 racers attended; aside from U.S. Nationals, which took place in early January, and Junior Nationals, which happen in March, these are the biggest races in which our comp team athletes compete. Because there is no restriction on entry and field sizes are a bit bigger than those at JNs, this is a good tune-up for these skiers.
It was a successful weekend for SVSEF as a whole, with athletes walking away feeling good about their efforts, kids breaking the top 10, and SVSEF on top of five out of eight podiums for the weekend. “The challenge now is to keep things fresh and help kids who are in top form continue to maintain their fitness and set goals for competitions coming their way,” said coach and cross country program director Rick Kapala. “We are also looking to help kids who are still growing in their ski capacity to see what’s happening around them, and recognize ways to make progress; it comes down to a good attitude and trying hard.”
Circumstances involving weather and course layout made the race weekend especially crazy. Conditions were really variable, with pouring rain on Thursday during course inspection. The hosts put together a new sprint course, with three major hills instead of two. With the stretch into the stadium skiing differently, fitness now really mattered, as did staying smart about how one used their energy; kids who had success did a really good job of applying energy when it mattered, and using it to their tactical advantage.
Friday was a freestyle sprint, and a number of SVSEF athletes won their qualifying race. Lily Brunelle, Scott Schulz and Logan Smith all did so, and also went on to win the overall race, which is pretty unique. The biggest breakthrough came from Lily. Logan and Scott have had good results in skate sprints for awhile (Scott has been on the podium at JNs in the skate sprint, and last year Logan won at JNs for her age group); Lily has come into form at exactly the best time. Winning her prelim for the first time and going out and winning overall, in a race with the entire West in attendance, made for a big day for Lily. Sarah Morgan, who formerly skied at Soldier Hollow, had a really nice charge at the end of the same final, which was good to see given the long road back from leg issues that she’s dealt with. Sammy Smith continued to dominate in the U16 category, finishing in third behind Nina Schamberger (second) and her sister Logan (first). “One of the things that Sammy and Logan bring is a really calm mind when it comes to competition. They are able to focus on the task at hand and go with their strategy, whatever that may be in that race,” noted Kapala. Luci Ludwig had a good day, making it to B finals and posting a fourth place finish for Intermountain and tenth overall. Adam Witowski also dominated with Scott all day (they finished 1-2, with Scott in first and Adam second); both looked very strong. Bjorn Halvorsen has been fighting a virus but had a good qualifier and made it onto the podium in third. “He wasn’t on the radar last year, but he’s grown so much physically, and the training has had some positive effects,” said Kapala. In the younger age groups, Berkeley Canfield threw down and won the U14 girls race.

Observers commented that they’ve never seen a race in which so many people fell.  There were broken poles everywhere, lots of crashes, and a huge pileup at the start of the boys’ race. At the end of the day, those at the top of the field weren’t affected; also at the end of the day, lots of kids said it was the craziest course they’ve ever been on. There was a lot of accordioning, with steep downhills followed by steep uphills, which was problematic. The steepest part of the course was a really hard, long herringbone hill, and by the time kids got to the high point, they were a bit wobbly. With 120 competitors per age class, it was pretty tough to navigate.
Logan and Sammy Smith both had another good day, dominating the U16 women’s class and finishing first and second. Their brother, Tucker Smith, did as well, skiing to third for U12s. Teammate Sven Halvorsen was sixth in the same age class. Sven’s brother, Bjorn Halvorsen, ended up seventh in the U16 boys race; he’s on his way and has had a good season so far, he just needs to get healthy again. Berkeley Canfield again led the way for U14s, winning the girls’ race. Teammates Anika Vandenburgh and Eloise Hebert had solid efforts, finishing 16th and 17th for U14s.
The U18 girls race was a good one for SVSEF, with lots of blue suits out in front. For the first two laps (the race was 3x3.3km), Lily Brunelle, Anja Jensen and Sarah Morgan skied clear of the rest of the field. Lily began to apply pressure at the start of the third lap, and she slowly gapped Anja, who slowly gapped Sarah. Lily charged to another victory on the weekend. “When she was younger, she was seen as a talented sprinter; sprinters can access anaerobic levels that distance skiers can’t, but this usually makes the second day of distance racing harder for sprinters. For Lily to go out and dominate in a classic distance race on a course that hard was really impressive,” said Kapala. Anja Jensen skied to a solid second right behind Lily, followed by Sarah Morgan in fourth. Ella Wolter, who took a fall early in the race, made a seamless recovery – Kapala mentioned “grit and toughness” when describing her race – she ended up seventh for U18/20s. Jenna Nurge and Sascha Leidecker both had great races on Saturday; Jenna was 14th overall and Sascha 21st.
Waxing for the U18/20 boys’ race was a bit worrisome due to the temperature, but the course held up pretty nicely because the courses were on man-made snow. Cameron Wolfe, a good skier from Vail, took the win, but SVSEF athletes Scott Schulz and Adam Witkowski hung with him for a bit and ended up second and third. Ted Yewer had his best race of the season, finishing fifth. Eli Eppolito had a good race, as well, coming in seventh. Hayden Halvorsen got caught in a pile up while in a pretty good place early on; with the fall, he fell back into the 20s, but skied a good race and landed back in the teens. Kapala noted that this was a “good, solid effort to reestablish his quest to make the JN team.”

U23 and Junior World Championships

Four SVSEF athletes are competing in Lahti, Finland, for U23 and Junior Worlds. Sydney Palmer-Leger raced on Sunday, January 20, making rounds in the classic sprint in 29th, and finishing 25th overall. Sophia was in the middle of the field. Peter Holmes raced on Monday in the men’s U23 classic sprint; he skied to 20th in qualifiers and 27th overall. In the 1/22 5km freestyle race, Sydney finished 20th. Johnny Hagenbuch also raced Tuesday, in the men’s 10km freestyle race; he was 34th overall in a field of 102 competitors. Peter raced again on 1/23 in the U23 15km freestyle; he finished 48th.
Racing continues today, with a 15/30km classic mass start for Junior Worlds.

World Cup

Gold Team skier Kevin Bolger completed another weekend of racing with the U.S. Team. In Otepaa, Estonia, Kevin finished 41st in the classic sprint on Saturday, January 19, and 56th in the 15km classic. On January 22, U.S. Ski and Snowboard named 18 athletes to the U.S. Team that will compete in the 2019 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Seefeld, Austria, to be held February 21-March 3. Kevin was one of the athletes named to the team.

SNOWBOARD

Baldy Banked Slalom, Bald Mtn., Idaho

Andy Gilbert
The seventh annual Baldy Banked Slalom took place this weekend with 133 racers. The BBS is the biggest gathering of snowboarders on Baldy every year, is a ton of fun and a great celebration of snowboard culture.
SVSEF’s Sebastian Lerner won the Next Generation age bracket (U12), and Kiki Pate won for girls. In the 13-18 age group, Jack Verhaeghe claimed victory, as did Madison Hothem. SVSEF coach Rick Millett finished fourth overall for men.
A big thanks to Debbie Bacca, Jon Verhaeghe, Jake and Liz Hothem, Alexia Lerner and everyone who volunteered. Also a big shout out to Riley Berman and Josie Bronwell from the SVSEF alpine program, who helped with all the timing on the day!

ALPINE

Wes Barron Memorial, Jackson, Wyoming

Alpine U16 athletes competed in Jackson at the Wes Baron Memorial, which featured three super G races. These were IMD open races and did not count as qualifiers. Jessica Blackburn, Saba Grossman and Anhwei Kirk opened up the weekend with top-10 finishes in the super G on 1/19 (Jessica 5th, Saba 7th, Anhwei 8th). Hannah Ferris and Logan Lindstrom were close behind in 10th and 11th. Nathan Gowe continued a successful competitive season, winning the men’s super G on 1/19. Teammate Colin Hanna finished ninth in the same race. Jessica, Saba and Anhwei stayed consistent into the next day, with Jessica coming in second in the 1/20 super G, Anhwei fourth and Saba seventh. Nathan did, as well – we was the second male finisher on Saturday. In the final super G on Monday, Anhwei stepped up into second, and Saba was fifth. Maya Lightner had a good race, finishing 12th. In the men’s final super G, Nathan rounded out a podium streak in third.

U.S. Development Camp, Europe

Jack Smith has been training and competing with the U.S. Development Team after garnering significant results in super G events earlier this season. He has truly stepped up to the occasion, skiing onto the podium in multiple instances on world class courses throughout the trip. At Selva Val Gardena in Italy, Jack did not finish his first run in the first giant slalom on 1/12, but came in fourth overall the next day in the giant slalom, and was the first 2001 in the national junior race. In Cavalese, Italy, he was second overall in the giant slalom on 1/19, and DNF in the slalom on 1/20 (both were national junior races). Moving onto Cortina d’Ampezzo, Jack finished 17th in the FIS super G race on 1/21 (3rd 2001), DNF the super G on 1/22, and was 13th overall in the FIS slalom on 1/23 (2nd 2001).

FIS University Series, Bridger Bowl, Montana

A few athletes competed at the FIS University events at Bridger Bowl in Montana. University series are high level events, and are selected based on FIS points (a unique approach, as all other series in the U.S. are selected off of USSA points). Bridger Harrison, Bennett Snyder, Cassell Lefevre, Max Noddings, Erin Smith and Merumo Ishimaru competed. Bridger was 39th in the 1/16 giant slalom, and Max was 41st (Bennett and Cassell DNF). For women, Erin Smith was 22nd (Merumo DNF). In the 1/17 giant slalom, Erin was again 22nd, and Merumo 38th. Bridger finished 34th for men and Bennett 49th (Cassell and Max DNF). The women’s slalom on 1/18 was cancelled. Bennett was 39th in the men’s slalom. The men competed again on 1/19 in slalom to replace another race; Bridger and Bennett were 43rd and 44th.

BIG MOUNTAIN

Athletes competed at both Red Mountain and Snowbird as part of the IFSA junior event series. Five athletes traveled to Snowbird and seven to Red Mountain. At Red Mountain, the athletes skied really well, but it was a tough venue and only three made it into finals after qualification runs (athletes move on if they're in the top 50% +1). Ethan Marx and Max Moss were tied for sixth place going into finals. In finals, Max broke his ski, and Ethan got lost in the fog of the course. Neither athlete skied the lines they'd inspected; despite this, Ethan still ended up in ninth place, and Max in 23rd. Will Price was also affected by the fog in his final run; he finished in 19th out of 49 athletes. The other athletes skied well but did not make finals. "I was really impressed by Mikey Ninnini, who is our team cowboy from Kimberly," said head coach Conor Davis. "He really stepped up and skied a challenging venue for his first competition, especially given he is rather new to skiing." Sunny Pratt was the only girl on the trip; she fell and had a technical disqualification due to gear loss.

The competition at Snowbird was lottery-based and was hard to get into. Paris Pratt had prequalified for the event based on previous results. Five SVSEF athletes in total competed. The weather played a factor, with snowfall accumulating at ~5" per hour. Paris Pratt finished ninth and Molly Kucher 12th for girls; both showed off the skills they've learned over the years with SVSEF and Sun Valley Co (both were on the Big Mountain team last year). Toby Rafford demonstrated solid mogul abilities, harkening back to his days on the SVSEF freestyle team. He had a great run and finished 21st overall in the 15-18 age category; a good result, especially given he is only 15. Owen Miller, skiing in one of his first real comps, was really assertive; he knew what he was doing and showed some great athletic ability, finishing 50th. Maille Dorland just missed finals, even though she was in ninth place with a hard cut to the field. She had a huge smile on her face at the end of her run.

SNOWBIRD RESULTS

Big Mountain athletes depart today for more competition, with 19 headed to Snowbird and three to Jackson.

FREESTYLE

 Snowbowl, Montana

SVSEF freestyle athletes competed at Snowbowl in Montana, January 19-20. The event featured one two-run single comp on Saturday, followed by a one-run single event on Sunday, as well as duals. Tillie Babcock had an outstanding weekend, taking the win for girls as a F13 in all three events. Ellen Shandro was seventh and Presly Watson 10th (in her first-ever competition) on Saturday. Briggs Farelli won his age group (M13) on Saturday, while teammate Nick Rubenstein won the same age group in the singles event on Sunday. Will Hausmann was second for M11 in both singles events. Erik Babcock broke the top 10 for boys overall on Saturday, finishing sixth (third in his age group). In duals, Tillie again took first for girls, while teammate Ellen Shandro finished seventh overall.

Tucker is an incredibly committed and hard-working individual. He takes advantage of every opportunity given to him, and he never holds back. With two older sisters who have seen success competitively in cross country skiing, Tucker is able to recognize the advantage of being so close to this (he'll ski behind Sammy in intervals and really push himself). At the same time, he remains supportive of their endeavors. Tucker gets along with everyone and is a great teammate. His drive, motivation and good nature are apparent to us and also to the coaches of the North Series team (Tucker is a two-sport SVSEF athlete).

IMD, U14 Qualifier, Sun Valley

The IMD Team closed out a successful first weekend of racing, with the added benefit of competing on their home turf. SVSEF staged a smooth weekend of racing, with a giant slalom on Friday and slalom events on Saturday and Sunday.

Temps were cold and the course was well-set to start off racing on Friday. SVSEF girls came out with a bang, sweeping the podium on their first run, and taking first and second overall; Paige DeHart won the race and Maya Lightner was second. Paige DeHart carried her success through the weekend, winning both slalom races on Saturday and Sunday. Maya Lightner joined her on the podium again on Sunday, finishing third behind Elisabeth Bocock. In the men’s U14 races, Tommy Normand had a great giant slalom race, finishing second behind Oscar Brown, and Cole Curci and Max Meucci secured top spots in the slalom races – Cole won both events, and Max finished third and fourth on Saturday and Sunday. SVSEF took three of the top six overall spots for the weekend; Paige DeHart was first overall for girls, Maya Lightner was third, and Cole Curci was the overall winner for boys.

Amidst the racing, IMD Head Coach James Tautkus reminded his athletes that “races are a test; they are a benchmark to let us know where we are at; they should affirm what we are doing well and identify what still needs work.” The hard-charging group has a couple race series lined up, with the Wes Baron Memorial and a speed project at Grand Targhee.

USSA, U16 NPS, Burke

Four U16 athletes competed at Burke, Vermont, for two slalom and two giant slalom competitions as part of the National Project Series (NPS); Ryder Sarchett, Marit Kaiser, Jessica Blackburn and Dasha Romanov are representing SVSEF. The NPS Tech Project brings the best U16s together from throughout the country for a week of training and racing; it is a part of the national pipeline intended to prepare athletes for more elite competition. Athletes have the opportunity to qualify to represent the U.S. at the OPA (Seven Nations) Cup in February based on results.
Women started competition with a slalom in the morning on January 8; Marit Kaiser finished eighth and Dasha Romanov 11th in a field of 30. Jessica Blackburn did not finish her first run of the day. Ryder Sarchett skied out his runs in the men’s slalom, and did not finish his second run in the second men’s slalom in the afternoon. Dasha had an amazing first run in the women’s afternoon slalom, landing the fastest time, but moved down to 18th following her second run. Jessica skied to 13th, and Marit was disqualified in her first run. The project continues today with training.
Although they did not complete both runs of their respective races, two SVSEF skiers clocked the best times on the runs they did complete, which is a substantial success given the field and the stakes; Ryder won the first run of the second race, as did Dasha.
Ryder Sarchett skied fast on January 10th in the slalom, winning the men’s race. He did not finish his second run in the January 11th slalom. Dasha Romanov did a good job of putting her runs together both days, finishing third in the January 10th slalom and taking the win in the January 11th slalom. Teammate Marit Kaiser did not finish in the January 10th slalom, but skied to a solid seventh on January 11th. Jessica Blackburn was 13th in the January 10th slalom and did not finish her second run on January 11th.
Based on results, Dasha qualified to represent SVSEF and the U.S. at the OPA Cup in Meiringen, Switzerland, February 4-15. This is a high-level U16 competition in Europe, and features some of the top athletes from eastern Europe.

North Series, Snow King GS, Jackson Hole

The North Series team traveled to Jackson Hole and Snow King for two giant slalom races to kick off their competition season. “We braved a cold weekend at Snow King with some really good results for all of our kids,” said Head Coach Adele Savaria. “Many of them showed great improvement throughout the weekend and it was fun to see all of their hard work over the past couple of months pay off in their skiing.”
SVSEF had good grouping throughout the weekend, with Rowan Desler, Josie Sarchett and Taylor Hovey going seven-eight-nine for girls in the Saturday giant slalom, and Rowan Desler narrowly missing the podium in fourth and Josie Sarchett cruising to sixth on Sunday. Tucker Smith won both boys' races handily. Simon Morgan found seventh on Saturday, and Paxton Sammis skied to a great 10th place on Sunday.

FREESKI

Freeski athletes have been training at home on Dollar and Baldy, and will have the opportunity to experience some new terrain and features and spend some time in the halfpipe at a camp at Keystone, Colorado, from January 19-26. The group’s first competition will be at home; a USASA event will be hosted at Dollar Mountain, February 2-3, with slopestyle and rail jam competitions.

BIG MTN

The Big Mountain crew parted ways, with some athletes headed for Red Mountain for an IFSA Junior National event, and others to Snowbird for another Junior National event.

SNOWBOARD

Snowboard athletes will compete at home this Saturday in the annual Baldy Banked Slalom, held on Baldy. The overall event winner can punch their ticket to the famed Baker Banked Slalom, held at the beginning of February at Mt. Baker.

CROSS COUNTRY

U.S. Cross Country Championships

Craftsbury Outdoor Center hosted the 2019 U.S. L.L. Bean Cross Country Ski Championships, held January 3-8. SVSEF sent over 20 athletes from Comp, PG and Gold teams to Vermont for the races. Top professional, collegiate and junior athletes from across the country converged for classic sprints and classic and skate distance races; aside from national titles, athletes competing at Nationals were looking to qualify for race opportunities abroad. A record number of SVSEF athletes did so; Peter Holmes, Johnny Hagenbuch, Sydney Palmer-Leger and Sophia Mazzoni all made the cut for U.S. World Junior Championships in Lahti, Finland, which will take place later this month. SVSEF has often had one or two (and twice, three) athletes qualify for World Juniors, but four is unprecedented.

Peter Holmes started off strong with a 11th place finish in the men’s 15km classic on Thursday. Johnny was the top U18 in the nation and 27th overall. For women, Sydney Palmer-Leger was third for U18s in the 10km, and Logan Smith won the U16 category. Gold Team skier Cate Brahms had a good result, coming in 21st overall. Sophia Mazzoni was the fifth U18 finisher (41st overall).

In the classic sprint the next day, Peter Holmes continued his success by stepping onto the American podium in third.

In Sunday’s mass start, Johnny Hagenbuch led SVSEF in the junior category, winning the men’s 10km freestyle race with a time of 26:27. PG skier Scott Schulz broke the top 10 in ninth. Peter Holmes was again SVSEF’s top finisher for senior men, skiing to 19th overall in the 30km freestyle mass start. Katie Feldman led the women in 17th in the 20km race. Sydney Palmer-Leger made the junior women’s podium in third for the 7.5km, and Logan Smith was 15th and the top U16 finisher.

In the final race on Tuesday, a freestyle sprint, Peter Holmes made heats and moved onto semifinals, and Maddie Morgan and Katie Feldman both made heats for women.

Peter will compete at U23 Worlds, and U18 skiers Johnny, Sydney and Sophia will race at World Juniors in Lahti, January 20-26. Post Grad Head Coach Paul Smith with join them as a coach on the trip. They leave today for Finland to begin training. More information about the upcoming events can be found here.

In addition to the four who qualified for Junior Worlds, Comp Team athlete Logan Smith had a standout series. At just 14 years old, Logan pre-qualified for Junior Nationals, and also qualified for the U18 Nordic Nations Cup in Scandinavia. She is also the second alternate for Junior Worlds, based on her results at Nationals.

Kevin Bolger was selected by the U.S. Ski Team to race the Tour de Ski, which is arguably the most exciting stint of World Cup action. He was invited based on his results in the Davos sprint, in which he just missed heats in 31st.

In the opening freestyle sprint of the Tour de Ski in Toblach, Italy, on December 29, Kevin charged to an impressive 13th overall in qualifiers. He moved onto heats and finished 21st overall. Kevin was 71st in the 15km freestyle race on December 30, also in Toblach, and narrowly missed heats in the next freestyle sprint in Val Muestair, Switzerland, on January 1st, landing in 34th.

FREESTYLE

Snowbird

Freestyle athletes headed to Snowbird in Utah for a qualifier for Junior Nationals. Sammy Smith led the charge; she placed fourth overall the first day in the two-run single moguls comp, won her age group (F15), and was second overall on the second day in the one-run single mogul comp in the morning. She again won her age group, and had the fastest time and highest air score of the day. Significantly, she bested two girls who have recently competed in World Cup events, and one who represented Norway at the Olympics in Pyeongchang. Tilly Babcock had a great weekend, coming in third for her F12 age group on Saturday, as did Rainey Wilson, who was also third for her age group on Saturday (F19). Drake Lovelin, for whom this was his first regional competition, won his age group (M11) on both Saturday and Sunday. Sunday’s dual event was cancelled due to poor visibility; it snowed 17 inches over five hours. The team heads to Park City for competition this Saturday and Sunday for divisional championships, which are another opportunity to qualify for junior nationals.

The team will compete locally on January 26-27 as part of the Sun Valley Freestyle Spectacular on Roundhouse slope – mark your calendars and come support SVSEF athletes on their home turf!

U.S. Selections

U.S. Selections for freestyle athletes took place December 16-22 in Winter Park, CO. High caliber athletes bulked up the start lists; there were internationally-ranked World Cup athletes from Japan, Australia, Norway, Sweden and Austria in attendance. SVSEF athletes did well; Luke Rizzo ended up top-40 both days. Rainey’s best result was 47th.

SNOWBOARD

By Snowboard Head Coach Andy Gilbert

A small crew went to Snowbasin with parents over the weekend to dip their toes in the slalom and GS waters.

While traditionally not a discipline that we train very often outside of freeriding, it is a huge tool as far as fundamentals and skill-building goes. We had a gate training day prior to the trip which was well received and beneficial.

For Christmas weekend, the SVSEF Snowboard Team tried to really mix things up. Rather than run “human slalom” with the crowds, the coaches decided that setting a few stubbies on Cozy with the Alpine team would be time well spent.

Big shout out to Nate Schwing and his coaches for helping make this happen! It was great to see the different disciplines all working together and using the same space.

Sunday saw the team in the classroom with Lindsay Mann, SVSEF Mountain Awareness Coordinator, for an avalanche course. The session covered the basics of what to look for, warning signs, general safety and more. This will be followed up with a 2-hour field study later in January. The importance of this information cannot be overstated. The team seemed to really soak it in, and hopefully this will be the beginning of their continued backcountry safety information. Lindsay really made the information accessible and easy to understand for the kids and is a huge asset to our programs. Thanks, Linds!

We followed up the class with a team lunch at the Hot Water Inn! Mark Oliver and the crew at 3 Jerks Jamaican BBQ are putting out some amazing food; if you haven’t had a chance to try it get in there now! Mark is a SVSEF alumni and has created something pretty special in Warm Springs! He has always supported snowboarding so we wanted to support him. The purpose of the team lunch was to bond a bit, talk about the upcoming season, goals and being a better team as a whole. The most successful teams we have had both on and off the hill were the ones that spent quality time together as a group. We are getting ready to get into the travel portion of our season and things like this help set the tone.

Then it was off to Dollar to close out the weekend!
All in all, a very diverse weekend, just like the sport of snowboarding – that’s how we like it!
