SVSEF provides ski and snowboard programming to nearly 700 athletes in the Wood River Valley. Athlete of the Week is an opportunity to highlight individuals who embody the values championed by this organization; sportsmanship, citizenship, character, teamwork, creativity, passion and perseverance.

Issy Rosellini, Alpine

She is a fifth grader at Hemingway School. Issy is not only passionate about skiing, her invention in a school competition just won 3rd place at the Invention Convention in Boise last month. She is a voracious reader and loves to sing. She has participated in the Sun Valley Symphony Camp for the past 4 years in the choir.

Molly has been training really hard this year, and after some stiff competition at Snowbird, she was able to beat out all the other girls and get first place last weekend in Park City. She always comes to training really excited to work hard, and she has been one of our team leaders this year as a senior girl in the group. Molly is very focused and driven; she has been working hard this year to raise money for her personal skiing goals, and she is dedicated to this sport and this group. We're glad to have her on the team!

This year, Drake has lead the charge for our Freestyle Progression M13 boys. This past weekend, he continued his podium streak with a second place at Snowbird, UT. Drake's positive mental attitude and infectious smile are hard to miss. His love for and dedication to the sport seem to grow with every practice. It has been a pleasure helping coach him over the past weeks.

SVSEF Snowboarding Athlete of the week is Sebastian Lerner. “Seabass” won the Beverly Hay Snowboard Cup for his results in the USASA Big Mountain West Series events at Dollar this week.
He netted two first place finishes in Boardercross as well as two silver medals in Slopestyle in the highly competitive Breaker Boys (13-14) Division. All the while keeping a smile on his face and having fun while riding at a high level. I personally watched him wait in the finish area and congratulate each rider as they finished their runs during the Slopestyle event.
He has been working really hard during training days and we see him becoming mentally tough but thoughtful about his riding! He’s just getting started.

Our Athlete of the Week is Savannah Pringle, a Baldy Devo and a LASAR skier. In the middle of her second year, she has never missed a day of Devo or LASAR, and it shows in her skiing. At our first NASTAR event this year, she was our top finisher overall, for both guys and girls. She has continued to improve after her NASTAR win, and we look forward to watching her journey unfold. She is a leader and brings a lot of energy to our team!

Sydney Palmer-Leger, originally from Park City, Utah, is currently a senior on the Cross Country Comp Team. An individual who approaches her training with self-discipline, positivity, and a penchant for diving headfirst into the pain cave without reservation, Sydney’s results this season have reflected the time and effort she has steadily put toward her athletic career. She’s proven to be among the top in the nation in her sport – multiple spots at and near the top this season have landed her the title of SVSEF Athlete of the Month for January 2020.
At the start of the 2019-2020 competitive season, Sydney posted her best SuperTour results to date, with podiums in Canmore and on her home turf in Sun Valley. These races set her up for a solid run at U.S. Nationals, held in Houghton, Michigan, in early January. Sydney ended up qualifying first of all the junior girls named to the World Juniors team. “Most importantly,” explained SVSEF Cross Country Program Director Rick Kapala, “she had a really good breakthrough race; she won the 7.5km classic junior race at Nationals against all the girls she typically battles with.”
This put her in good form heading to Lausanne, Switzerland, for the Youth Olympic Games, which brings together the top 16-17 year olds from around the world. She posted two fourth place finishes, among the best results the U.S. has ever had at the Youth Olympic Games. On the women’s side, along with Kendall Kramer, Sydney garnered the first top-5 results for women. “She’s skiing really well now, and we have a little less than a month to get her prepped and ready for World Junior Championships,” said Kapala. Sydney will be training at home for the next couple weeks before heading to Soldier Hollow, where she’ll complete her final tune up races for World Junior Championships.

“The other thing that’s been exciting for Syd,” noted Kapala, “is that she signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Utah, so she has the next phase of her skiing and educational journey set now. Hailing from Park City, UU is a good fit for her, and it’s really great that she has this opportunity to ski for Utah and take advantage of what her skiing has done for her so far.”
“Sydney’s put a lot of effort into improving her classic skiing this year, to the point where now classic distance skiing is one of her strengths. She’s always been a good classic sprinter, but her training and focus on classic distance this season has put her in a place where she’s an all-around good skier – she’s among the best girls in the country across the board, having seen success competing in both techniques in distance, as well as in sprinting.”

Fletch Palmer is Athlete of the Week for the Mini X team. Fletch is one of those athletes who stays cool under pressure, and is polite and coachable. In two years, Fletch went to from beginner to standing at the top of the mogul course for the Freestyle Spectacular last weekend. The courage it takes to stand up there for the first time with adults and peers judging you is commendable. Having an open mind and patience under pressure are qualities that will help this young athlete be successful in whatever he chooses to pursue.

Jack Broderson has been a great addition to the XC Prep Team this season. He manages to find positivity and fun in everything we do at Prep Team. Whether slogging up a hill in freezing temperatures or pushing himself out of his comfort zone on speedy downhills, Jack has smile on his face, as if every day at ski team is a new adventure. Never a complainer and eager to improve, he makes teaching fun and is an essential part of our team.

Dominic is new to SVSEF this year and has already impressed all the North Series coaches with his stellar attitude. After a big fall or when skiing something more challenging, Dominic never complains, he just quietly keeps working on his skiing. He is a great addition to any group because he supports his teammates and works hard every day. There have been a couple days when he has forgotten his equipment but that doesn’t stop Dominic from showing up the next day with a big smile. We love having Dominic on North Series and can’t wait to see how his skiing progresses throughout the season.

Ethan Marx, 15, Big Mountain Team

Ethan has been a crossover athlete, training with both the Alpine USSA team and with the Big Mountain team this season. He has been a role model athlete for both teams. Ethan has focused mostly on the big mountain side of competition this winter; a fifth place finish at Whistler in March secured his spot at the North American Championships at Kicking Horse this upcoming week (watch his runs here). I’m really proud of him, especially since he’s at the bottom of his age bracket, being 15 and skiing against older and more experienced athletes (his age group covers 15-18 year olds).

Jack has made large improvements on his skiing and jumping in the past weeks. Down at Rotarun, he has worked hard on his backflip so he can bring it to the snow next season. Falon has a great deal of passion for the sport of ski racing and her teammates. Through her consistent enthusiastic effort, she has shown a lot of progression throughout this season, and an affinity for speed. Falon found a passion for her speed through her excellent results at Schweitzer, and she is excited to continue that energy as we head to Mammoth, California as we will be racing downhill, super G, GS and slalom to finish out the season.
