SVSEF Snowboarding Athlete of the week is Sebastian Lerner. “Seabass” won the Beverly Hay Snowboard Cup for his results in the USASA Big Mountain West Series events at Dollar this week.
He netted two first place finishes in Boardercross as well as two silver medals in Slopestyle in the highly competitive Breaker Boys (13-14) Division. All the while keeping a smile on his face and having fun while riding at a high level. I personally watched him wait in the finish area and congratulate each rider as they finished their runs during the Slopestyle event.
He has been working really hard during training days and we see him becoming mentally tough but thoughtful about his riding! He’s just getting started.

Our Athlete of the Week is Savannah Pringle, a Baldy Devo and a LASAR skier. In the middle of her second year, she has never missed a day of Devo or LASAR, and it shows in her skiing. At our first NASTAR event this year, she was our top finisher overall, for both guys and girls. She has continued to improve after her NASTAR win, and we look forward to watching her journey unfold. She is a leader and brings a lot of energy to our team!

Zoe is one of the first skiers out the door, ready to ski, every day at South Devo. Her quiet determination and commitment to continuous improvement is clear in her skiing ability. She sets an example, and is an incredible role model for the rest of our team. On the days when she can’t make it to practice, Zoe will make up for the workout on weekends or off days. We are so happy to have Zoe on the team with us this year, and can’t wait to see her continue to excel as a skier, teammate, and role model this season!

Fletch Palmer is Athlete of the Week for the Mini X team. Fletch is one of those athletes who stays cool under pressure, and is polite and coachable. In two years, Fletch went to from beginner to standing at the top of the mogul course for the Freestyle Spectacular last weekend. The courage it takes to stand up there for the first time with adults and peers judging you is commendable. Having an open mind and patience under pressure are qualities that will help this young athlete be successful in whatever he chooses to pursue.

Claire’s highlighted as this weeks athlete of the week because she’s a fantastic teammate and extremely accountable. She has a fantastic attitude, a great sense of humor, and comes to training each day with her best effort to improve, which is evident in her progress. Athlete of the Week: January 20

We're back with Athlete of the Week! SVSEF provides ski and snowboard programming to nearly 700 athletes in the Wood River Valley. Athlete of the Week is an opportunity to highlight individuals who embody the values championed by this organization; sportsmanship, citizenship, character, teamwork, creativity, passion and perseverance.

Johannes is a hard working, big smiling, trick tossing boss man. He came into this season with a small bag of tricks, but through his hard work, dedication, and positive attitude, his repertoire is rapidly growing. Starting with rodeos in Park City, to bios and now cork 7’s, there doesn’t seem to be a limit to what Yo can do. He’s a trendsetter and a great role model for the rest of the team. Proud to have him on the squad.

Aaron Gathrid might be the quiet type, but his strong skiing and unbridled positive attitude have been doing the talking for him. Since joining SVSEF this fall, Aaron has been on the fast track of progression. Not only has his ski talent expanded to a whole new level, but his camaraderie and caring mentality for the group has truly shown what a great person he is.
Aaron has been tackling every obstacle you can throw his direction, it’s been an absolute pleasure watching him along the way.

Elliot has proven that talking about skiing doesn’t make you the best skier. He encourages his peers to push their limits by pushing his own. He is always ready to go big, whether others will or not. Elliot supports his teammates if they stomp it or blow up. He’s a great kid, always with a smile on his face and the boldness to get back on his feet after landing on his butt.

This is the final installment of Athlete of the Week for the 2018-2019 season.

Ethan has been a crossover athlete, training with both the Alpine USSA team and with the Big Mountain team this season. He has been a role model athlete for both teams. Ethan has focused mostly on the big mountain side of competition this winter; a fifth place finish at Whistler in March secured his spot at the North American Championships at Kicking Horse this upcoming week (watch his runs here). I’m really proud of him, especially since he’s at the bottom of his age bracket, being 15 and skiing against older and more experienced athletes (his age group covers 15-18 year olds).

Jack has made large improvements on his skiing and jumping in the past weeks. Down at Rotarun, he has worked hard on his backflip so he can bring it to the snow next season. His dedication and work ethic have been a great example for his teammates. We are really excited to see him develop as a skier and athlete.

Falon has a great deal of passion for the sport of ski racing and her teammates. Through her consistent enthusiastic effort, she has shown a lot of progression throughout this season, and an affinity for speed. Falon found a passion for her speed through her excellent results at Schweitzer, and she is excited to continue that energy as we head to Mammoth, California as we will be racing downhill, super G, GS and slalom to finish out the season.

SNOWBOARD
USASA Nationals, Copper, March 31-April 4
3/31
SVSEF started off the week with Jack Verhaeghe competing in GS for Breaker Boys (12-13); he finished 16th overall.
4/1
Boys competed in slalom, and girls in halfpipe. For Breaker Boys, Jack Verhaeghe finished 19th. Nico Lerner took 12th for Menehune Boys (10-11). In the halfpipe, Olive Gilbert rode to 26th for Breaker Girls. Channing Curci and Maddie Hothem went eight and nine for Youth (14-15).
4/2
Jack Verhaeghe had a great day in the Breaker Boys (12-13) boardercross, riding confidently and smoothly; he advanced all the way to the semifinals in the biggest field of the entire event. Unfortunately, he just missed the transfer by one spot in third (top two advance). It was still his best ever finish in BX at Nationals – he was sixth for his age group.
Nico Lerner also made it to semifinals for Menehune Boys; he was riding with the spice and ready to race. There were some great heats on the way, and again in semifinals our SVSEF rider just missed moving on. Nico finished second in the consolation round, landing him in sixth place.
Notables:
Caleb Hothem 21st
Sebastian (Sea Bass) Lerner 39th
The ladies competed in slopestyle, and Channing Curci pulled down another top ten finish in eighth place. After a bobbled first run, she dusted off and had a full pull on her second go.
Olive Gilbert had a good first run, landing all her jumps and adding a backside 180 on one of the rail features – she ended up in 33rd in one of the biggest fields of the event.
4/3
Day four had the boys at slopestyle and the ladies in boardercross. Zoe Bacca rode strategically, making it through heats and into finals; she took the overall victory for the day and was named a national champion. Olive Gilbert, Maddie Hothem and Channing Curci also competed. Maddie made it into semifinals.

Junior World Championships
Payton Bacca represented SVSEF at Junior World Championships for snowboardcross in Austria. She was 45th in the qualifier, in a field of athletes who represented 22 different countries. This was a unique opportunity for Payton to dip her toes in more international competition, having worked hard all season, competing at NorAm and FIS competitions.

IMD, U14 WR Jr Champs, Big Sky, March 21-24
IMD athletes competed at Big Sky for U14 Western Region Junior Championships. Said Head Coach James Tautkus, “we are very proud of these athletes. They set lofty goals this year. Some achieved, some barely missed, and in Big Sky we mostly took advantage of a great opportunity to learn, grow, and build on experience for the year and years to come. Our depth on the IMD alpine team has great potential. Nothing comes easy, especially in ski racing, and I think these results prove that we are doing a good job preparing our athletes for the challenges ahead in this sport and in life.”
SVSEF had nine U14 athletes in attendance. Based on their results during this series, Paige DeHart qualified for U16 Nationals – she is the only female athlete from the Western Region to do so – and Maya Lightner qualified for Whistler Cup.

U14 Vail Divisional Project, Vail, March 28-31
Lowie Watkins, Ruby Crist, Faith Cooke and Will Kogelmann were invited to attend a U14 divisional project, part of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard pipeline. This was an opportunity for athletes to score points, and also to race out of the region for the first time. “It’s a new experience for the Intermountain Division, as it's the first time IMD has taken a team to this event,” said Alpine Program Director Will Brandenburg. “It was one of the more challenging GS venues they’ve raced on, so it was a really great learning experience for their development.”
U16 Nationals, Breckenridge, March 31-April 4
Ryder Sarchett started Nationals off right with the win in the men’s slalom. This was a repeat of last year, when he was also the national champion in slalom; back-to-back victories is an impressive feat. Nathan Gowe was 28th overall for men. In the women’s race, Dasha Romanov finished sixth, Marit Kaiser 14th and Jessica Blackburn 21st (third for first year U16s). Paige DeHart was the top U14 and 23rd overall.

IMD Backcountry Day
Lindsay Mann and Sun Valley Guides led a group of six alpine IMD skiers into the backcountry for a day of touring. They ventured into the Pioneers, skiing the ridgeline that parallels Hyndman Creek Road. The skinning conditions were tricky earlier in the day, which forced the group to switch to boot packing on their first lap. They covered 1600 vertical feet in their ascent, and the same for their descent. “All of the athletes had great attitudes and really embraced the team mentality of backcountry skiing,” noted Mountain Awareness Coordinator and USSA coach Lindsay Mann.

SVSEF hosted the annual Gary Black Jr. Memorial Race, named in honor of the late Gary Black Jr., a stalwart supporter of SVSEF and skiing culture. The race drew 110 athletes U14 and under, and skiers competed in a dual panel slalom on Greyhawk. “It was really fun and a great way to end the season,” said Alpine Program Coordinator and North Series Assistant Coach Josie Brownell. “We saw some amazing costumes and some fantastic skiing. It was a really energized group. Heather Black attended and said a few words in memory of her late husband, Gary Black Jr., for whom the race is named. Heather and Alpine Program Director Will Brandenburg helped announce and hand out awards from the race; it was a nice way to wrap up the season.”
Overall winners were Owen Walker and Eden Gardner.

Luke is one of our graduating seniors who has grown up through SVSEF. He has continued to pursue his passion for skiing; from devo to alpine to freestyle, his love for the sport resonates throughout his training. This past year came with many challenges coming off of an extremely successful competition season the year before. Luke was faced with a difficult situation of juggling his scholastics and intense training/competition schedule. He finished the season with some impressive results, placing 18th at Junior Nationals and 25th at US National Championships. We're really proud of Luke, his hard work and dedication, and what he's accomplished this season

Anika is a kind and spirited young lady who motivates her peers by setting an example. She’s small but mighty; when she puts her mind to something, she really commits to it, and always with a positive attitude.
A few weeks ago, she competed at Western States at Soldier Hollow. Although she is a U14, she decided to race as a U16 – she wanted a challenge and she wanted to see what she could do. That in and of itself was an accomplishment. Not only did Anika make this decision, but she rose to the challenge, and she did it with energy and grit as she always does. Post-race, having stuck with girls who were heads taller, she was ready to do it again. Anika has a go-after-it, positive attitude that her teammates really feed from, and it’s really cool to see.

Prep, Comp & PG, Junior Nationals, Anchorage
from Program Director Rick Kapala
Junior National races are being hosted by the Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage on the extensive trail system at Kincaid Park.
Monday
Monday's race was a freestyle 5km for all age classes of women (U16,U18, U20) and 5km for U16 Boys. U18 and U20 boys raced a 10km. The course was rolling with lots of quick transitions and offered our skiers a different feeling course than the big climbs common to our Intermountain courses. Conditions were fast on older transformed snow and the kids all said they really liked the course after the race. Johnny posted the second fastest time of the day among all boys, being bested only by Gus Schumacher of Alaska. Johnny and Gus skied together on the winning USA relay team at World Junior Championships. Johnny, who started on the course three minutes in front of Gus, said, “ I knew I had to take it out hard and try to get a gap because Gus finishes really fast." Johnny had a slim lead over Gus with two kilometers to go, but true to form, Gus was able to claw back the time needed to slip by Johnny in the final stretches of the course. It was a really good race for Johnny no matter how you cut it.
Overall, the Sun Valley kids had a good start to the week, with eight different skiers earning top 10 in the US, led by Johnny Hagenbuch’s national championship in the U18 Boys. Johnny was joined on the podium for U20 Scott Schulz, who took second, and Scott was joined in the U20 men's field by Adam Witkowski, who posted a ninth place finish. Also posting top 10s were Sammy Smith in fourth, Anja Grover in ninth and Logan Smith 10th for three SV gals in the top ten of the U16 girls. Sophia Mazzoni earned a top 10 with an eighth in the U18 women and Bjorn Halvorsen earned his first top ten medal with a ninth in the U16 boys.
Wednesday
Wednesday featured a classic individual sprint on a 1.4km course, with a really steep climb at the midway point followed by a high-speed plunging downhill and tight turn into the finish stretch. The days format was as follows: all skiers complete one all-out effort qualifying lap of the sprint course to try and post a top 30 time to get into the heats of their respective age classes. Once into the heats, the skiers are divided into five quarterfinals with six skiers per heat; the top two from each heat advance to the semifinals, along with the next two fastest skiers. Then the fastest two skiers from each semi advance along with the two fastest skiers to the finals.
Sun Valley skiers had an exceptional day in the sprint qualifier with a best ever 13 skiers making it into the afternoon heats. Leading the way for Sun Valley were Sophia Mazzoni (U18) and Logan Smith (U16) who both posted the fastest qualifying times in their age classes, along with Lily Brunelle (U20) who posted a second fastest qualifier for her class. The other SVSEF skiers who qualified for the heats included, on the girls side, Samantha Smith (U16), Sarah Morgan and Anja Jensen for U18 women, and Heidi Booher for U20 women. The boys who qualified for the heats included Scott Schulz, Adam Witkowski and Eli Eppolito (U20 men), Johnny Hagenbuch and Haydn Halvorsen (U18 men) and Bjorn Halvorsen, U16 men.
The afternoon brought challenging conditions as the course deteriorated into sugary deep snow, which made for tough climbing and tricky downhills. The Sun Valley kids though managed the conditions well, with again eight different SVSEF skiers posting top tens. Leading the way was Logan Smith who earned a national championship in the U16 Girls race. Logan successfully defended the sprint championship she won last year at the 2018 Junior Nationals held at Soldier Hollow. Joining her with podium finishes were Sarah Morgan who has the best the result of her season with a silver medal in the U18 women, and Johnny Hagenbuch, who returned to the podium for a second time with a third place in the U18 boys. Also earning top tens for our community were Scott Schulz in fourth and Adam Witkowski seventh in the U20 boys, Bjorn Halvorsen eighth in the U16 boys, Lily Brunelle fifth for U20 women and Samantha Smith fourth for U16 gals. This was Sammy's second race finishing fourth, and it’s a really solid week so far as she is actually a U14 (13 years old) who is racing up into the U16 age class. She also just competed at Freestyle Junior Nationals held at Snowbird, Utah, immediately before the start of Cross Country Junior Nationals.
Also skiing at the Championships for Sun Valley are Ted Yewer and Sebi Radl Jones (U18 boys), Luci Ludwig (U16 girls) and Tia Vontver, Jenna Nurge and Ella Wolter (U18 girls) to round out the 20 SVSEF skiers who are in attendance.
Next up is Friday’s mass start distance classic races with 5km for U16 boys and girls, 10km for U18 boys and U18 and U20 girls and 15km for U20 boys.
