34th Annual Laura Flood Memorial Race Rallies Alpine Ski Racing Community

JHSC’s Taryn Moe and Rowmark’s Cree Gilmour Take Overall Series Titles at the Laura Flood

The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF) welcomed more than 150 U16 ski racers from across the Western Region for three days of racing to earn qualifying points towards the national championship. One slalom and two giant slalom races were held Feb. 8-10, having shifted to Saturday through Monday when heavy snowfall required pushing the schedule back by a day.

The Laura Flood Memorial holds a special place in the heart of our local ski racing community. Flood passed away in a ski training accident at 19 while racing for the University of Colorado. Her kind-hearted nature and passion for skiing is remembered by her family and the greater Sun Valley ski community, and those who knew Laura would say that she was vivacious, kind, super determined, fun-loving, and always showed the epitome of sportsmanship.

“Another amazing race series this year!” said Heather Flood Daves, Laura’s sister. “Such fantastic skiing by all the athletes on the new World Cup venue! They showed perseverance and grit in dealing with challenging weather conditions and supported all their fellow racers and teammates, exemplifying good sportsmanship and solidifying friendships throughout the Western Region. This is the true heart of ski racing! It is also exciting to see the successes of the Sun Valley athletes—congratulations to them!”

New this year, Saturday evening featured an awards ceremony for the first day of racing held at the Sun Valley Opera House with free pizza and a screening of the Rogue Lines documentary for the athletes, coaches, and families. “Saturday night was really special to bring everyone together,” said Flood Daves. “It’s one way we can continue the tradition of strong ski racing here in Sun Valley and how the sport can have a special way of building community. I truly appreciate how much work SVSEF and the Sun Valley Race Crew put in to put on this series at such a high level year over year.”

“The Laura Flood marks a proud moment for the coaches, parents, and staff that support the kids on their progressive journey through ski racing,” said Will Brandenburg, Chief of Race. “The series provides strong competition for the U16 athletes to see where they are at this point in the season ahead of regional and national championships; and it’s also a really fun event that brings together so many in the ski racing community—the Flood family, coaches, volunteers, families, athletes, and the Sun Valley Resort staff all contribute a tremendous amount of time and energy to make this a really special event for all involved.”

On Monday, the final day of racing, the Laura Flood Memorial perpetual trophy was presented to two U16 athletes with the best overall race results of the series. This year, Taryn Moe out of Jackson Hole Ski Club, WY and Cree Gilmour from Rowmark Ski Academy, UT took home the trophy for the women and men’s overall series title.
