34th Annual Laura Flood Memorial Race Rallies Alpine Ski Racing Community

JHSC’s Taryn Moe and Rowmark’s Cree Gilmour Take Overall Series Titles at the Laura Flood

The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF) welcomed more than 150 U16 ski racers from across the Western Region for three days of racing to earn qualifying points towards the national championship. One slalom and two giant slalom races were held Feb. 8-10, having shifted to Saturday through Monday when heavy snowfall required pushing the schedule back by a day.

The Laura Flood Memorial holds a special place in the heart of our local ski racing community. Flood passed away in a ski training accident at 19 while racing for the University of Colorado. Her kind-hearted nature and passion for skiing is remembered by her family and the greater Sun Valley ski community, and those who knew Laura would say that she was vivacious, kind, super determined, fun-loving, and always showed the epitome of sportsmanship.

“Another amazing race series this year!” said Heather Flood Daves, Laura’s sister. "Such fantastic skiing by all the athletes on the new World Cup venue! They showed perseverance and grit in dealing with challenging weather conditions and supported all their fellow racers and teammates, exemplifying good sportsmanship and solidifying friendships throughout the Western Region. This is the true heart of ski racing! It is also exciting to see the successes of the Sun Valley athletes—congratulations to them!"

New this year, Saturday evening featured an awards ceremony for the first day of racing held at the Sun Valley Opera House with free pizza and a screening of the Rogue Lines documentary for the athletes, coaches, and families. “Saturday night was really special to bring everyone together,” said Flood Daves. “It’s one way we can continue the tradition of strong ski racing here in Sun Valley and how the sport can have a special way of building community. I truly appreciate how much work SVSEF and the Sun Valley Race Crew put in to put on this series at such a high level year over year.”

“The Laura Flood marks a proud moment for the coaches, parents, and staff that support the kids on their progressive journey through ski racing,” said Will Brandenburg, Chief of Race. “The series provides strong competition for the U16 athletes to see where they are at this point in the season ahead of regional and national championships; and it’s also a really fun event that brings together so many in the ski racing community—the Flood family, coaches, volunteers, families, athletes, and the Sun Valley Resort staff all contribute a tremendous amount of time and energy to make this a really special event for all involved.”

On Monday, the final day of racing, the Laura Flood Memorial perpetual trophy was presented to two U16 athletes with the best overall race results of the series. This year, Taryn Moe out of Jackson Hole Ski Club, WY and Cree Gilmour from Rowmark Ski Academy, UT took home the trophy for the women and men’s overall series title.

Chase Josey Takes 2nd Overall at Mt. Baker’s 36th Legendary Banked Slalom

SVSEF’s Naomi Gorringe and Vivian Smith slay their first ride at the famed event

SVSEF Snowboarding Program Director and Coach Andy Gilbert hit the road this past weekend to Mt. Baker to meet up with Chase Josey and two up-and-coming juniors from the SVSEF Snowboarding Futures Team—Naomi Gorringe and Vivian Smith. They were all there to compete in the 36th Legendary Banked Slalom, held Feb. 7-9.

Josey, a two-time Olympian, SVSEF alum, and member of the 2024/25 U.S. Snowboarding Halfpipe Team, rode fast and furious to a second overall finish in the Pro Men—just .09 seconds out of first place. In their first trip to the famed Legendary Banked Slalom, Gorringe and Smith rode their way to fifth and sixth in the Junior Girls division respectively. Andy Gilbert landed a top ten finish in the Grand Masters division.

Entries alone are hard to come by for the event—they are either earned through pro rider invitation, top results at a specific few qualifying events, or those lucky few win a lottery spot to jump into the contest. Josey returned as an invited rider among the Pro Men. Gorringe earned her spot through her strong performance and win at the recent Baldy Banked Slalom, and Smith was one of the lucky ones to snag a lottery entry. Gilbert carried over his 2024 entry to this year.

The “Baker Banked” made its much-welcomed return this year after being cancelled in 2024 when warm weather and rain caused the Mt. Baker Ski Area’s snow base to recede by 14 inches in just a few days. The course crew had their work cut out for them this year with 41″ of new snow in the days leading up to the event.

“I couldn’t be more proud of and stoked for our young riders, Naomi and Vivian, for jumping into the Baker Banked—it truly is a legendary event and an opportunity to learn and ride amongst so many of the best in the sport,” said Gilbert. “The snowboarding culture is just amplified at Baker—and for us to share this experience all riding there on our own—and with one of the greatest mentors our young riders could ask for in Chase—these are the opportunities and memories that last a lifetime and help athletes grow through the sport they love so much.”

Double Duals Overall Wins for SVSEF Freestyle Team at Roundhouse Rumble

Wells Dolson and Sylas Barrett battle massive moguls to bring home Dual Moguls titles

The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF) Freestyle team hosted the third annual Roundhouse Rumble Feb. 8-9 on Bald Mountain’s Roundhouse Slope. The competition welcomed 80 athletes from CA, CO, ID, and UT for two Singles Mogul events and one Dual Mogul event over the two days.

“It was impressive to see our community come together to help pull off the event with the snowfall we had just ahead of it,” said John Grigsby, SVSEF Freestyle Program Director and Coach. “Sun Valley received more than 40 inches the week of the competition, which made the course deep and challenging for sure.”

The two-run Singles Mogul event was held on Saturday. SVSEF’s Wells Dolson led the charge for the women with her huge airs and second fastest time down the course landing her in second place. Dolson’s teammate Isla Sundby barely missed the overall podium with her second run, just one point out of third place.

On the men's side, SVSEF’s Will Hausmann came in second place nudging out fellow teammate Drake Lovlien by .14 of a point. Beau Forelli was really impressive throwing a Cork 7 off the top air for the first time, ending him in sixth overall. Sylas Barrett with his smooth style landed in eighth, Austin McMahan ninth, and Moi Bicas-Dolgen 10th with some of his best turn scores earning him a personal best.

By Sunday the moguls were massive and SVSEF’s Sienna Loredo had a great run with a big 360 off the top air and was the fastest female down the course, landing her in third overall—a personal best. Teammates Will Hausmann and Drake Lovlien took home another second and third overall.

The Duals Mogul competition was really impressive with Wells Dolson going head to head with Wasatch Freestyle’s Madiline Lin in the finals. Dolson had her off of the start and continued to pull away from her through the mid section. She threw a huge front flip off of the bottom which helped her pull further ahead for the first place win.

For the men, Sylas Barrett nudged out teammate Will Hausmann in the semi-finals to go against Justin Lim in the finals. Sylas had cleaner turns and air to take the overall judges decision and the top spot on the Duals podium.

SVSEF Freeski Team Weathers Winter Storm at USASA Big Mountain West Series

Slopestyle meets snow and more snow at Dollar Mountain

Dollar Mountain welcomed the third stop of the USASA Big Mountain West Series this weekend following Jackson Hole, WY and Woodward Park City, UT; and along with it came the heaviest and most persistent snowfall of the season here in Sun Valley. SVSEF’s Freeski Progression and Freeski Futures Teams rallied through challenging conditions, showcasing the necessity of grit and perseverance when the going gets tough.

In slopestyle competition, a panel of judges evaluate each rider's run, with their scores averaged to determine the final result. Scores are based on a combination of criteria including trick difficulty, execution quality, amplitude (height and distance achieved on jumps), variety of tricks used throughout the course, and overall style.

“This team showed such strong determination,” said Tyler Conway, SVSEF Freeski Program Director. “Our coaches saw a lot of growth this weekend across the board—from athletes competing for the first time to those who finished on the podium. The best outcomes we saw were all the “full pulls” (completed runs) and athletes trying their best even when the weather didn’t play along. Now we can go ski some pow, LET IT SNOW! Go TEAM!”

SVSEF’s Alex Grant Takes the Overall Win at Chris Bodily Memorial 4-Races in McCall

SVSEF Alpine U12 North Series Team scores big at North Series IMD Qualifier

The SVSEF Alpine U12 North Series Team traveled to McCall this past weekend for the 80th Annual Chris Bodily Memorial 4-Way Races. Nearly 150 athletes competed in four disciplines at two venues over three days – Slalom, Giant Slalom, Gelande Ski Jump and Cross Country Freestyle Sprint. This year’s McCall 4-Way also served as the North Series IMD Qualifier event.

On Friday evening, athletes competed in the Slalom race at Little Ski Hill. Saturday was a multi-event day with the Gelande Ski Jump followed by a Cross Country Freestyle Sprint. The athletes finished the weekend with a Giant Slalom race on Sunday at Brundage Mountain.

Each leg of the event counts towards the overall standings. SVSEF U12 athlete Alex Grant won the overall for the weekend, based on his performance in the Slalom, Gelande Ski Jump, Cross Country Freestyle Sprint, and Giant Slalom. SVSEF traveled with many athletes to this race, ranging from U10s to U12s. The SVSEF athletes all placed consistently in the top 10 through each event.

“It was a fantastic weekend for all!” said Claudia Stern, SVSEF Alpine U12 North Series Team Head Coach. “There were lots of podiums and personal bests and unbelievable improvements all around. We saw grit and determination with kids challenging themselves in difficult stormy conditions as well as overcoming fear as they launched down the Gelande Ski Jump!”

SVSEF Snowboarding Stomps USASA Boardercross and Slopestyle at Dollar

Park City’s London Zarkos and Lincoln Miller awarded Beverly Hay Snowboard Cup

Along with the biggest snowstorm of the season, the USASA Big Mountain West Series rolled into Sun Valley’s Dollar Mountain Jan 30-Feb 2nd for four days of events, starting with two days and four races in Boardercross (BX) followed by two days of Slopestyle.

Sun Valley Company did an amazing job with the venues at Dollar Mountain with heavy support from all departments including Race/Events, Snowmaking, Terrain Parks, and Mountain Management. SVSEF Snowboard and SVSEF Freeski staff also provided technical and equipment support as well as amazing parent volunteers led by Lindsay Armeen.

BX kicked things off Thursday and Friday on one of the best tracks Sun Valley and the Series has ever had. USASA ran two races each day across multiple age groups. SVSEF Snowboarding had several standouts in the BX discipline including Camille Armeen with multiple podiums and Rylan Olson in the mix in every heat he ran. Riders were working to gain Regional and National points toward qualifying for the USASA National Championships at Copper Mountain, CO in April.

New snow made things a bit slow in some less than ideal conditions, for the amazing park line that Sun Valley Company provided for the Slopestyle (SS) events. Nevertheless, riders rose to the occasion throwing runs with multiple spinning combos and technical rail tricks giving spectators a good show.

Rylan Olson continued to show he is an “ATV” on a snowboard throwing big 720s on jump two all weekend and even going for the biggest rotation of the contest with a backside 1080 that took him a little low on the landing but so much to come from this rider. Camille Armeen started her runs with a risk equals reward approach spinning a BS 360 on jump one. Charlie Theobald was going maybe the biggest of any of the riders on every feature, Viv Smith had nice Method Airs on the second jump. Naomi Gorringe had some of the most tech runs amongst the women and the most stylish BS 180 of the weekend. Karsen Miller spun on all three features and cleaned the rails on his way to multiple podium spots.

As is traditional to these events, the SVSEF Snowboard Program awarded the Beverly Hay Snowboard Cup to the best overall riders from the combined fourth Boardercross event and the two slopestyle events. The Beverly Hay Snowboard Cup has been awarded since 1999 and past winners include Olympians Graham Watananbe, Sean Fitzsimmons as well as Olympic Gold Medalist Kaitlyn Farrington. With podiums in all three events, this year’s winners are London Zarkos and Lincoln Miller both from Park City, UT. Zarkos and Miller were both on hand for the awarding of the trophy by its namesake Beverly (Hay) De Chevrieux, who has championed SVSEF Snowboarding since its inception in 1992.

“Hosting these events each year and awarding the Bev Hay Cup is always a highlight,” said SVSEF Snowboarding Head Coach, Andy Gilbert. “It gives the kids a chance to showcase what they have been working towards in front of the hometown crowd. It is also the midpoint of the season and really brings into focus what the goals are and what needs work as we head towards the finish line in April. The riders on the SVSEF Snowboard Team are coming into form in a major way and we expect great things from this group. The coaching staff was very pleased with the week we just had at Dollar!”

Alpine Athletes Chase Their Need for Speed at Wes Barron Speed Series

SVSEF’s Tucker Reimund Takes Overall Series Title for Men

In collaboration with the Jackson Hole Ski Club, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort hosted the Wes Barron Speed Series Jan. 24-27. Athletes from the SVSEF Alpine U16 USSS Team traveled to Jackson Hole, WY for the Super G (SG) series, where the men and women each had three SG races over the four-day event.

The series welcomed 160 athletes representing ten ski clubs from across the Intermountain Division, and was open to second-year U14, U16, and U18 age categories. SVSEF held their own and then some, racing against some of their toughest competition in the region. Awards were given to the top five overall men and women in each race and to the top man and woman overall at the end of the series.

The men raced on Friday and Saturday, where Tucker Reimund took fourth, first, and third in the three respective races, ultimately taking the overall title for the series. Reimund was only .61 seconds off the win in race one, won race two by .66 seconds, and was .62 seconds off the top step in race three. As a team, the men took six of the 15 podium spots across the three races with Huxley Flood grabbing a third and fifth place in races one and three, and Conway Selznick a fifth place in race two, less than a second off Reimund’s winning time..

Race one for the women was held on Sunday with Ava Huey taking fourth and teammate Elliot Leahy not far back with a top ten in seventh. Huey and Leahy swapped places in race two on Monday with Leahy in fourth and Huey in seventh. Anna Taylor also raced to a top ten spot in race two. Race three saw two teammates flip again with Huey in fourth and Leahy in seventh.

“We couldn’t be more proud of how our athletes showed up at Jackson Hole,” said Nate Schwing, SVSEF U16 Head Coach. “Over the course of three Super G races per gender, they pushed hard, skied with confidence, and made huge strides. Their hard work is paying off, and the progress they’ve made is something to truly celebrate.”

Up Next for the Alpine U16 USSS Team: SVSEF will host the 34th Annual Laura Flood Memorial Race in Sun Valley Feb. 7-9.

Roundhouse Slope Welcomes Freestyle Spectacular Under Bluebird Skies

SVSEF’s Will Hausmann lays down two age group podiums, sixth and second overall in singles

Eighty-six athletes from across the west found their groove and threw down for strong competition on Baldy’s Roundhouse Slope during Saturday and Sunday’s Freestyle Spectacular. The SVSEF Freestyle Team brought their A-game, landing several age class podiums on home snow.

“It was impressive to see such a high level of competition this past weekend,” said John Grigsby, SVSEF Freestyle Program Director.

Amongst the field of competitors were athletes who competed in World Cups last season and Chase Littlefield, a bronze medalist from the Junior World Championships held in Kazakhstan a few weeks ago.

“I was excited to see how much our program has improved over the past year,” said Grigsby

Notable standouts were a few of SVSEF’s up and coming young guns—Will Hausmann from Sun Valley Community School, and Drake Lovlien from the Sage School—both placing in the top 10 overall. Both Hausmann and Lovlien have been back and forth on the podium this season. Wells Dolson, also from Sun Valley Community School, won her age class (F15) both days for singles and is one to watch in the years to come with her already high level of tricks and jumps.

“It was great to see Will’s hard work starting to pay off,” said Grigsby. “He received his highest turn and air scores of the season which landed him in second place between Junior World Championship bronze medalist Chase Littlefield, and Billy Brown, one of the top Australian Mogul skiers.”
