Athletes test their skills and race for glory in skate, classic, and flying downhill races

More than 50 SVSEF Cross Country skiers from the Devo, Prep, and Prep Pro teams descended on the Mike Harris Trails in Victor, ID this weekend to race in the annual Intermountain Youth Championships. Hosted by the Grand Teton Ski and Snowboard Foundation, the event included two days of racing and three events—a skate distance interval start race, a flying downhill race, and a classic mass start distance race.  

“The annual Intermountain division event is dedicated to inspiring the up-and-coming youth skiers in our division and it did exactly that,” said Kelley Yeates, SVSEF Cross Country Program Assistant Director and Prep Team Head Coach. “The sunny days and vibrant energy made anyone nearby want to be a cross country skier, and the enthusiasm of the Sun Valley skiers and families made you want to be part of our SVSEF team!” 

Skiers raced on 1km, 2k, 3.5km and 5km courses that climbed gradually up and in and out of trees before descending back down into the stadium. It was a very transitional course both in conditions and technical skiing. The Sun Valley skiers put their all into their races; and the U16 girls found the podium several times over the course of the weekend. 

“It was a fantastic weekend in Victor for all the SVSEF racers—one that made you proud to be part of our club,” said Yeates.
