Cross Country Comp Team Head Coach

The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF), a competition and training program for winter sports located in Ketchum, ID, seeks a full-time Cross Country Comp Team Head Coach. The Comp Team Head Coach leads by developing a vision, setting team goals, and building a healthy and positive culture in alignment with SVSEF’s philosophy, mission, and values. The Head Coach is responsible for all aspects of the program, including athlete development, planning and preparation for practices and competitions, managing team staff, budget, operational logistics, and participating in appropriate community events—all in compliance with SVSEF procedures and policies. The Head Coach is responsible for ensuring the health and safety of athletes to achieve and maintain peak performance at all levels. SVSEF XC program success is defined broadly and involves much more than winning. This position is a key position for SVSEF XC and must reflect the highest levels of integrity, ethical behavior, and adherence to SVSEF principles. Overall program success begins with the leadership of the Head Coach.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement training programs for competitive high school age athletes of all skill levels, focusing on improving ski technique, speed, and endurance.
  • Plan and organize races and other events, including coordinating with other coaches and staff members.
  • Monitor athlete progress and adjust training plans and strategies as needed to help them achieve to the best of their ability.
  • Maintain the clubs’ and athletes’ equipment to ensure it is in good condition and properly maintained.
  • Manage administrative duties such as scheduling, budgeting, and communicating with parents and other stakeholders. 
  • Present a professional and positive image of the team when interacting in the community on and off the job.
  • Work to ensure all team rules and philosophies are adhered to.
  • Stay up to date with the latest trends and techniques in Nordic skiing, including attending training clinics and workshops and incorporating new techniques into training programs.
  • Be a thought leader in cross country skiing—always assessing how we fit into our community, IMD and US Skiing.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for managing, guiding, and mentoring SVSEF athletes.
  • Responsible for implementing a training plan appropriate for all ages and levels.
  • Be consistent in messaging SVSEF team athlete expectations regarding attendance, work ethic, and sportsmanship.
  • Responsible for all trip planning, including race and training opportunities.
  • Responsible for trip budgets and implementation of such when on the road.
  • Work with IMD to maintain a solid relationship between the division and SVSEF XC.
  • Coordinate and attend athlete goal setting, mid-season and end-of-season meetings as outlined by SVSEF. Work closely and in coordination with SVSEF coaching staff throughout the season to best support the athletes.
  • Bring issues and questions to leadership personnel as quickly as possible, so resolution can be obtained and we can collectively prevent misunderstandings or miscommunication.
  • Assist with the races conducted and/or hosted by SVSEF XC.
  • Assist athletes/parents in the selection, sizing, and acquisition of equipment.
  • Take care of team equipment and notify the PD if maintenance/replacement is needed. Oversee wax room, strength, and Comp Team room.
  • Ensure professional and efficient athlete and race management while on the road, by making sure SVSEF athletes are getting everything they need to perform well.
  • Engaging athletes regularly and checking in with them on their well-being and goals.
  • Be professional, be punctual, and be well prepared for each day.
  • Additional responsibilities per team needs and personal skills / interests as per PD instructions.
  • Manage a coaching staff of 1-2 coaches that will help assist you in the implementation of training, travel, and community engagement with the team.

Requirements:

  • Requires at least 5 (five) seasons of coaching Nordic skiing at the club level.
  • Experience competing as a Nordic skier at the collegiate, national, or Olympic levels may count towards this requirement.
  • Possess a strong understanding of training methods and technique.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire athletes of all ages and skill levels.
  • Ability to run a Nordic treadmill or a willingness to learn.
  • Highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
  • Willingness to travel and work weekends as the job demands.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • This position requires both time spent on a computer as well as being outside in all weather conditions.

Certifications and licenses

  • Valid driver’s license needed.
  • CPR and First Aid required.
  • USSS license
  • Level 100 USSS certification
