Christian Beckwith has spent his career immersed in the world of alpinism as a climber, writer, editor, and social leader. His list of accomplishments is extensive: In 1996, Christian became the youngest person to edit the world’s premier mountaineering journal, the American Alpine Journal. He founded and now serves as board chair of the Teton Climbers’ Coalition, co-founded Alpinist Magazine, and founded SHIFT, a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to the advancement of nature as a social determinant of health. In 2023, he was inducted into the 10th Mountain Division’s Warrior Hall of Fame for services rendered to the Division. Christian’s latest project, Ninety-Pound Rucksack, is a podcast that examines the stories that made the 10th Mountain Division famous as well as those history has forgotten. Christian will speak about his fascinating research on the 10th Mountain Division, its ties to the Sun Valley area, and how it contributed to the birth of outdoor recreation, avalanche science, and wilderness rescue.
