Athlete of the Week: March 9

SVSEF provides ski and snowboard programming to nearly 700 athletes in the Wood River Valley. Athlete of the Week is an opportunity to highlight individuals who embody the values championed by this organization; sportsmanship, citizenship, character, teamwork, creativity, passion and perseverance.

Harper Mallett, Freeski Travel

"Harper is the hardest working freeski athlete I know and is always out there pushing the limits of his skiing. He is also a great role model for the next generation of freeski athletes. Look for great things from Harper in the future, on and off the hill!"
Tyler Conway
Freeski Travel Head Coach

Wesley Sewell, Baldy Devo

"Our Athlete Of The Week is Wesley Sewell – he is a super smooth skier with a great attitude and is an excellent teammate.
Wesley never complains and will ski any run. He is also very courageous, showing true grit after coming down with the flu; a tough way to get a personal flight to Boise. We are looking forward to seeing him soon back on team!"

Chad Pringle
Baldy Devo Coach

Sarah Leidecker, Cross Country Prep

"Sarah is one of the most helpful, positive skiers we have ever had on the team. She is always the first one to volunteer to help, and completes any and every task with a huge smile on her face. Sarah is capable of finding the fun in every task – even earlier this year when a significant injury could have brought her down, she persevered through and came back grinning and raring to go. Last weekend at the Intermountain Youth Championships, Sarah showed her appreciation for the sport and the people around her when she jumped up on the microphone at the awards banquet and took it upon herself to thank all the coaches and volunteers at the event on behalf of all the other competitors, not something a typical 7th grader would be eager to do. Sarah’s kind, positive nature is contagious and with her hard work and appreciation for every part of the sport, she is an integral part of the Prep Team."

Kelley Yeates
Cross Country Prep Team Head Coach

Astrid Villa came to the SVSEF Snowboard program this season as a WRHS senior. Astrid had been a recreational snowboarder, but her passion for the sport had grown beyond that.
She has approached joining the team as what I like to describe as her “senior project.” She shows up every day with a smile and a determination to improve, which are infectious and noticed by her teammates.
Her improvements have been many, including hitting her first park features ever this season! What she is doing is hard, and she approaches it with the best possible attitude. She has been a great addition to our team and an example for all of the riders on our team!

Jaxon Patterson is the Mini X Athlete of the Week. Jaxon lives outside of the valley, and his folks have made a heroic effort to help him to get rad with us. He is grateful and kind, and he's also brave just taking on a rail with good speed for the first time, then taking it to the knee. It only took him about five minutes before he went right back to skiing the park at Dollar. Ow, that's tough! Jaxon is also dedicated, which shows through in his stellar attendance. Anna Koonce is our Athlete of the Week. This Devo skier has become such an incredible asset to the team after being on the team for years – now coming upon her “graduation” from the team, she has hit full stride as a leader. Although not thrilled about racing, she consistently takes full advantage of being on the team and is an integral part of it. She is thoughtful, caring, wants to learn, and mentors the younger athletes. Her willingness to volunteer for literally ANY job we need help with has been really refreshing (and very clearly demonstrated on the yurt trip). She is also such a fun type of goofy and if you ever need some great photos of a happy face you should loan your phone to her…

Issy has worked hard to make gains both in her comfort level with speed and with on-snow technique. She has been putting in the time, stretching her herself, and the benefits of doing so are showing through.  She really found her feet when she finally switched out her twin tips for race skis!!

SVSEF Snowboarding Athlete of the week is Sebastian Lerner. “Seabass” won the Beverly Hay Snowboard Cup for his results in the USASA Big Mountain West Series events at Dollar this week.

He netted two first place finishes in Boardercross as well as two silver medals in Slopestyle in the highly competitive Breaker Boys (13-14) Division. All the while keeping a smile on his face and having fun while riding at a high level. I personally watched him wait in the finish area and congratulate each rider as they finished their runs during the Slopestyle event.

He has been working really hard during training days and we see him becoming mentally tough but thoughtful about his riding! He’s just getting started.

Fletch Palmer is Athlete of the Week for the Mini X team. Fletch is one of those athletes who stays cool under pressure, and is polite and coachable. In two years, Fletch went to from beginner to standing at the top of the mogul course for the Freestyle Spectacular last weekend. The courage it takes to stand up there for the first time with adults and peers judging you is commendable. Having an open mind and patience under pressure are qualities that will help this young athlete be successful in whatever he chooses to pursue.

Claire’s highlighted as this weeks athlete of the week because she’s a fantastic teammate and extremely accountable. She has a fantastic attitude, a great sense of humor, and comes to training each day with her best effort to improve, which is evident in her progress. She’s an absolute pleasure to coach and keeps a smile on her coaches’ faces. She’s a model mountain town kid, and for all these reasons is SVSEF’s highlighted Athlete of the Week!

We're back with Athlete of the Week!

Johannes is a hard working, big smiling, trick tossing boss man. He came into this season with a small bag of tricks, but through his hard work, dedication, and positive attitude, his repertoire is rapidly growing. Starting with rodeos in Park City, to bios and now cork 7’s, there doesn’t seem to be a limit to what Yo can do. He’s a trendsetter and a great role model for the rest of the team. Proud to have him on the squad.

- Coach Cassidy DuBois, “Queso”

Aaron Gathrid might be the quiet type, but his strong skiing and unbridled positive attitude have been doing the talking for him. Since joining SVSEF this fall, Aaron has been on the fast track of progression. Not only has his ski talent expanded to a whole new level, but his camaraderie and caring mentality for the group has truly shown what a great person he is.

Aaron has been tackling every obstacle you can throw his direction, it’s been an absolute pleasure watching him along the way.

Elliot has proven that talking about skiing doesn’t make you the best skier. He encourages his peers to push their limits by pushing his own. He is always ready to go big, whether others will or not. Elliot supports his teammates if they stomp it or blow up. He’s a great kid, always with a smile on his face and the boldness to get back on his feet after landing on his butt.

Cash Mintz proved to be a great teammate last weekend, when a fellow athlete was injured and the coach was farther down the run. Cash waited with his teammate until the Ski Patrol arrived. He often skis in the back of the group to be able to help his teammates, and is always looking out for their safety and well-being.

Peter is a 5th grader at the Community School. He is a very mindful athlete making good food choices, and always has a positive attitude. Peter is a second-year Mini Xtreme skier and is skiing very well this year. I think it is really great that he knows when to be cautious and when to send it. He represents Mini X well because he loves skiing off-piste and doing jumps. One particularly great thing about Peter as a teammate is that he is always looking out for his friends, which makes him a great role model for the team.

Henry Dolson is our athlete of the week. Henry has impressed with his attitude and work ethic. Although he is new to the team this season, he has really acclimated quickly and leads by example. His willingness to push himself and enjoy the process is admirable.

Peyton Sundberg competes on SVSEF’s Alpine FIS Team. When I think of Peyton, the word that comes to mind is consistency. Peyton steadily works at her craft day in and day out. Peyton does a phenomenal job with her conditioning, and that was noticeable immediately when we hit the snow in November! On snow, she diligently woks on her form and tactics. Peyton takes a lot of runs, and is determined to improve. She represents what we love to see from Alpine FIS athletes. Peyton is passionate about the sport, she is committed to improving her craft, and she has excellent character.

Austin has been a part of our SVSEF family over the past few years. He is consistently one of the most thoughtful and kind athletes out there. His dedication is unwavering; at the beginning of the dryland season, Austin came up with the goal of learning a backflip on the trampoline. He has spent countless hours working on it,and recently achieved his goal. Austin is a joy to have on the team, and sets a good example both in his training and in his everyday approach to life.

New to cross country skiing, this enthusiastic and infectiously happy girl decided to make her first try at skating at the Winterstart race last weekend. What an accomplishment! She is a kind teammate, up for a challenge and willing to try every day she comes to practice, on dry land or on snow. It is an honor to be around her bright and shining smile. There is no telling where Vivian might go when she sets her mind to it.
