Reimund, Moe named Intermountain Division overall champions

Moe and Reimund were named the IMD overall champions for women and men, respectively, following their performances over the course of the entire IMD season. The season included races across the region, starting in December at Jackson Hole and ending in April with the Snow Cup Races in Utah. The series included races in Sun Valley in February.
Callie Allen Wins 1st Place in Halfpipe at USASA National Championships at Copper Mountain
Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation snowboarder Callie Allen’s ambitious style and hard work resulted in a national championship title at Copper Mountain, Colorado, earlier this week.
Allen put up a 67.00 run at the United States of America Snowboard and Freeski Association’s (USASA) Snowboard National Championships Halfpipe event to claim first in the youth 15- to 16-year-old women’s division on Monday, April 1.
She won in style.
“A lot of times, especially in younger divisions, [riders] will kind of work up their amplitude and then go for spinning tricks,” he said. “So that fact that she was just dropping straight into a spinning combo, the judges rewarded the risk that she took there.”
Allen said the difficult-early combo was the plan going into the run and a culmination of the season’s work.
“I had been doing that a bit earlier in the season at comps and it kind of just works out better,” Allen said. “High risk, high reward.”
Allen was relieved to end her season on such a positive note.
“It’s still just shocking,” she said. “But it feels very rewarding because I’ve had a lot of ups and downs. It’s been a tough season [when] we didn’t get much snow this year. Mentally, it’s just been hard, so it makes me feel really happy and proud of myself to see that it’s all kind of worked out and it shows.”
Gilbert was similarly positive about the championship, adding more about Allen’s character.
“She’s a special athlete,” he said. “I think she’s a special kid. Everyone on the team, you know, kids, coaches, just everybody kind of gravitates toward her. She’s got a very [positive] personality and to be around her and watch her succeed [in] something that she’s been working really hard for, it was just really, really special.”
However, the accolades didn’t stop with Allen’s win on the halfpipe. She also placed third in Slopestyle in the 15- to 16-year-old women’s division Tuesday.
Allen said these accolades early on in her snowboarding career should help her keep advancing in the sport.
“Last year I was at nationals, that kind of just put me in the conversation, and this year it’s kind of like a jumpstart [in the sport],” she said. “It’ll put me in the picture in the future and it’ll just keep me going. It’s definitely a lot of motivation.”
Gilbert added that getting a top finish at this event could help Allen and others in similar positions.
“These kinds of results, like getting on the podium, can sometimes open the door for some invite to things like camps with the U.S. team or potentially even qualify for some events for next season,” he said.
Generally speaking, Gilbert was excited with the direction of the snowboarding program after the national championships and the season’s conclusion.
“We’re really lucky with this group of kids that are coming up through the program right now,” he said. “They’re all really supportive of each other and when one kid succeeds, it kind of feels like the whole team does. So, Callie is helping elevate us right now with this result. She deserves a ton of credit for her hard work.”
Big Weekend for SVSEF Alpine at Western Regional and Tri-Divisional Championships
SVSEF Alpine U14’s bring home multiple podium and top ten finishes amongst the best at Tri-Divisionals
Athletes from the SVSEF Alpine U14 Travel Team polished off their seasons away from their home mountain this past weekend. While some members of the team were at the Western Region U14 Junior Championship held March 21-24 at Grand Targhee Resort in Alta, WY, fellow teammates were competing on the same days at the U14-U16 Tri-Divisional Championships at Big Sky Resort and Bridger Bowl, MT. The Junior Championships bring together the best 60 athletes from each gender to represent their respective divisions in Super G, Giant Slalom, and Slalom. The Tri-Divisional Championships welcomes U14-U16 qualified athletes from Northern, Intermountain, and Alaska Divisions.
Sun Valley is part of the Intermountain Division (IMD) which includes Wyoming, Utah, and Idaho.
WESTERN REGION U14 JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP, MARCH 21-24, GRAND TARGHEE RESORT, WY
For the Western Region U14 Junior Championship, the IMD invites the best 17 boys and 19 girls from these three states to compete. Seven SVSEF U14 athletes were invited including Bianca Smith, Jasmine Smiley, Alex Heidel, Wyatt Limburg, Henry Questad, Henry Flynn & Declan O'Toole. This event presents the opportunity for athletes to compete against the best in the region, and meet new coaches and athletes from across the West to build connections beyond their small communities back home.
This year’s Western Region event took place on the Big Thunder venue at Grand Targhee, with the Super G finals on Friday, GS on Saturday, and SL on Sunday. The kids were able to familiarize themselves with the course terrain during a training day on Thursday, but less than ideal conditions lined up for the competition days, with heavy winds and firm snow on Friday for the Super G.
The athletes stepped up to the plate, battling through the conditions and some particularly challenging course sets. The weekend set the stage for opportunities to improve and for teammates to encourage each other, with plenty of personal growth and friendships made in a short period of time.
SVSEF Alpine U14 Travel Team Head Coach Charlotte Gourlay was impressed with the team’s output, “Each of the athletes had at least one really solid run, and the stoke was high by the end of the series! They really embraced the goal of getting to know new teammates and coaches from around the division and built some friendships they can take into their ski racing futures.”
Bianca Smith graced the top ten in GS for the girls, where her second run impressively brought her from 11th to sixth place. While Smith was the only athlete from SVSEF to take home a top ten spot, the Intermountain Division swept the top three overall for the boys and took the top podium spot in the overall for girls.
All in all, Coach Gourlay was pleased with the team’s experience, “Our SVSEF athletes had a great opportunity to compete against the best of the best from their age class, and make new lasting friendships within our Intermountain Division! They truly stepped up to the challenge and made the most of the experience.”
TRI-DIVISIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, MARCH 21-24, BIG SKY RESORT AND BRIDGER BOWL, MT
Athletes from the Northern, Intermountain, and Alaska Divisions qualify to compete at the Tri-Divisional Championships each spring. U14 and U16 teams test their speed in Super G, GS, and SL. This year’s Super G races were held at Big Sky Resort, while the GS and SL races were contested at Bridger Bowl.
Nineteen SVSEF athletes made the trip to Montana to compete in the Tri-Divisionals—mostly U14 and a handful of teammates from the U16 team.
All in all, the teams came home with nearly 20 top ten finishes, including more than a handful of top three podium spots. In the girls U14 Super G, Piper Spengler took second and Collette Duke eighth. For the boys U14 Super G, three landed in the top ten with Corbin Flood second, Kai Sammis fourth, and Cameron Beck sixth. Reid Holman came in ninth for the boys U16 Super G.
In GS, Liv Harrington took second place and Piper Spengler sixth for the U14 girls, and Cameron Beck, Kai Sammis, and Corbin Flood all landed in the top five in first, second, and fourth respectively.
On the final day in SL, the U14 girls brought home four top ten finishes with Taylor Rundell in first, Piper Spengler third, Carolyn Fleming fourth, and Collette Duke tenth. For the U14 boys, Corbin Flood took seventh, Kai Sammis eighth, and Thijs Lloyd tenth.

SVSEF Alpine U16 Team Shines at U16 Western Region Championships
Taylor Moe and Ruby Smith go One-Two in the Overall for Women
Nearly 180 athletes descended on Alyeska Resort in Girdwood, AK for the U16 Western Region Championships March 19-22. Slalom, Giant Slalom, and two Super G races over the four days were on tap for both the men and women from across the region, in their quest to qualify for U16 Nationals. At the conclusion of the championships, SVSEF's Ruby Smith, Taylor Moe, Tucker Reimund, and Ulrich Rossi qualified for U16 Nationals by finishing in the top 15 for the overall. U16 Nationals will be held March 31-April 4 in Vail, CO.
“The SVSEF Alpine U16 squad qualified 13 athletes to attend U16 Regionals in Alyeska, AK,” said Nate Schwing, SVSEF Alpine U16 Team Head Coach. “We were greeted by great hospitality and beautiful scenery. The snow conditions were very challenging for the competing field which made for a series where athletes needed to adapt and persevere. Our team performed well and it was an experience our group will for sure take with them into the future!”
The second Super G race for both men and women was the Championship event to count towards the overall titles, which were awarded based on the best two out of three races. Awards were given to the top ten per gender per championship event, and to the top three per gender in the first Super G.
At the conclusion of the U16 Western Region Championships, SVSEF’s Taylor Moe won the overall for the women sweeping all four races, with teammate Ruby Smith coming in second overall with an eighth place in SL, third in GS, and a third and second place finish in the two Super G races respectively.
On the men’s side, consistent skiing by Ulrich Rossi landed him in fourth overall with a sixth place in SL, eighth in the first Super G and second place in the Super G championship race. Tucker Reimund snuck into seventh overall, tying for third in SL and finishing eighth in the championship Super G race.
Other standout results for the SVSEF U16 Team include first-year U16’s Conway Selznick tying for ninth in the men’s GS and Huxley Flood bringing home a top ten in tenth place in the first Super G race. Second-year U16 teammate Jay Blackburn had a solid series as well finishing 18th in the GS, 28th in the first Super G, and 29th in the championship Super G.
First-year U16 athlete Elliot Leahy skied a strong Super G series racing to 13th in the first race and a top 20 in 18th in the championship Super G.

SVSEF XC Gold Team Racing Across and Bringing Home the Globe
It has been a whirlwind year for the SVSEF XC Gold Team. They have had one of their best seasons in recent history with every athlete on the team competing in World Cup events. The team, individually and collectively, has traveled to Alaska, Vermont, New York, France, Norway, Sweden, Finland, British Columbia, Alberta, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland, and there is still more racing to come.
The most recent accolades go to Jake Adicoff for being named the Para Nordic Visually Impaired (VI) World Cup Champion and taking home the crystal globe. Adicoff earned this title by racing to two golds and one silver at the Prince George Para Nordic World Cup Finals in Saint George, BC. On March 14, Adicoff, with guide Reid Goble, finished second in the 5km VI Individual Start Classic Race. Two days later Adicoff and Goble found their way to the top of the podium, claiming gold in the VI Skate Sprint. On March 17, the outcome was the same, seeing Adicoff and Goble with another gold in the 20km Mass Start VI Classic Race. What a season for Adicoff, who racked up two golds in Para Nordic World Cup racing earlier in the season.
Peter Wolter, SVSEF XC Gold Team, is coming off racing Period 3 of the World Cup, where he most recently competed in the 20km Mass Start Free at the World Cup in Falun, Sweden on March 17. Wolter finished 60th in a very competitive field. This was the last of six World Cup races Wolter has competed in since March 1.
Mariah Bredal, SVSEF XC Gold Team, found her way to Europe between race series to compete in the historic Engadin Skimarathon, a 42km Skate Marathon in Switzerland, where she finished ninth. Bredal followed up her success in Switzerland, racing her way to a third place podium in the 54km (skate) SkoyteBirken in Norway. Bredal, who is finding success at the longer distances said, “I have done a good number of skate marathons this season now, so I'm looking forward to one last race tomorrow.”
Racing on US soil now, Gold Team members Adicoff, Wolter, and Bredal are competing in the SuperTour Finals in Duluth, MN, March 21- 26.
“The team has been spread across the World this March competing at World Cups, European Marathons, and Para Nordic World Cup Finals, so it’s nice to come together for the last three weeks of the season and finish out in Duluth, Jackson Hole, and then home in Sun Valley,” said SVSEF XC Gold Team Head Coach Chris Mallory. “While some are running on fumes, we’re looking forward to this 40km National Championship on March 26 as we have a strong distance crew. As it goes, they didn’t really have winter in the Midwest and a foot of new snow is expected for the race.” Follow along for race results at the SuperTour HERE.
Sammy Smith, SVSEF Gold Team/US Ski Team, just returned from a full and successful season of FIS World Cup and Junior World Championship racing. A season highlight came at the World Junior Championships in February, where she brought home silver for Team USA in the Skate Sprint. Smith hopes to join her team one more time at the FIS International Spring Series April 4-6 in Sun Valley, ID. Smith is currently focused on finishing up her senior year at Boise High School and fitting in a few track meets along the way.
Bentley Walker-Broose, SVSEF XC Gold Team/Austrialian National Team, who competed in FIS World Cups in Canmore, CA and Minneapolis, MN, as well as FIS Junior Worlds alongside teammate Sammy Smith, is back at home in Australia focusing on his academic courses at University.

The Stifel U.S. Ski Team roster is headlined by 2023 world champions River Radamus and Paula Moltzan, as well as AJ Hurt. All three scored World Cup podiums this season.

SVSEF XC Sends 10 Skiers to 2024 Junior National Championships in Lake Placid, NY
SVSEF skiers join a strong contingent to compete for the Intermountain Division at Junior Nationals
Ten skiers from the SVSEF XC Comp and Post Grad Teams will be competing at the Junior National Championships March 11-16 in Lake Placid, NY.
Athletes qualify for this event through a series of Junior National Qualifying races, held this season in Jackson Hole, WY; Midway, UT; and McCall, ID. The best three races from all events are combined to select the athletes that will represent the Intermountain Division (IMD) in U16, U18, and U20 categories.
Representing SVSEF and IMD for U16’s are Charlie St. George and Nick Gardiner. Cora Faye Scott, Jodie Willow Maguire, Berkeley Canfield, and Molly Maybach will represent SVSEF and IMD in the U18 female category, as well as Teddy Hobbs will compete in the U18 male age group.
Galen Grohusky and David Shycon, both U20’s will represent SVSEF with the IMD team, and Otus Beason, also a U20, will represent SVSEF with the High Plains Division. All three are members of the SVSEF Post Grad Team.
“I am thrilled for this group of skiers to have the opportunity to compete with the best in the country,” said Becky Flynn, SVSEF XC Program Director. “They have trained all year to get to this championship event—it is one of those times when hard work, perseverance, and commitment all pay off, and it’s exciting for the athletes to be able to put it all together in one place.”
Opening ceremonies will be in the historic Lake Placid Olympic Center, where athletes from all ten regions will come together, hear from US ski team members about what it takes to become the best, take an athlete oath, and light the ceremonial torch.
The first race will be a 5km (U16) and 7.5km (U18/20) freestyle event on March 11. Next up will be a Classic sprint (U16, U18/20) on March 13 followed by a 5km (U16), 10km (U18) and a 15km (U20) classic mass start race on March 15.The championship will end with a 4 X 3km relay for all on March 16.
The IMD team will send 61 athletes to the Junior National Championships, where the best juniors from 10 regions across the country will compete. SVSEF athletes Charlie St. Geroge and Nick Gardiner are excited to be testing their talents for the first time against the best U16 skiers in the US. For all others, this will be their second, third, or fourth time toeing the line with the top junior skiers in the country. We wish them the best as they compete next week!

27th Annual Monroe Cup Honors Legendary Coach Lane Monroe
SVSEF’s Savannah Pringle and JHSC’s Zachary Lighthart Take the Win at 2024 Monroe Cup
The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation hosted the annual Monroe Cup alpine ski race at Rotarun Ski Area Feb. 24-25. Named after ski racing coach and legend Lane Monroe, the Monroe Cup brings nearly 200 U10, U12, and a handful of U14 athletes from across the region to compete in this Intermountain Division (IMD) Qualifier event for the IMD Championships.
“Simply put it was an amazing celebration of kids and ski racing,” said Chuck Harris, SVSEF Junior Alpine Program Director and Chief of Race for the Monroe Cup. “The sun was out, and the snow was perfect. The tailgate scene by the parents was over the top. The smile on the athletes' faces ruled the weekend.”
“We were honored to have Lane Monroe show up on Sunday—he got to watch the kids race and he was part of the awards ceremony, which was really special,” said Harris.
Monroe was the Program Director and Head Alpine Coach at SVSEF from 1970-1996, with a hiatus between 1973 and 1976 to serve as a U.S. Ski Team coach. From 1973-1974 Monroe was the Men's Special Teams coach and then the Head Women's Coach from 1975-1976. The Monroe Cup was first held in 1997 on Bald Mountain, and continued there until 2021 when it moved to Rotarun Ski Area to continue as a slalom-only event. This was the fourth year the event has been held at Rotarun.
Three of Monroe’s former athletes currently coach for SVSEF’s Alpine program and were on-hand at the races this weekend. Pat Savaria grew up racing through the Sun Valley Ski Team and eventually took the reins as SVSEF Alpine Program Director when Monroe handed them over. He went on to coach for the U.S. Ski Team and currently coaches with the SVSEF Alpine Women’s FIS Team.
“Lane Monroe, along with Jack Simpson, my dad Jim Savaria, and Michel Rudigoz, were really the forefathers of SVSEF,” said Pat Savaria. “As a coach we knew we were skiing well if Lane talked to us that week—we could feel his enthusiasm, and if he didn’t, we better be working harder. He also brought his real estate and business savvy to the vision for SVSEF, helping ultimately establish the SVSEF training center through his work in the 1980’s and 90’s.
SVSEF Alpine U12 Travel Team coaches Adele Savaria and Skip Merrick were also coached by Monroe. “Lane was an extremely motivating coach,” said Adele Savaria. “He definitely got you fired up to do your best.”
Skip Merrick echoed Adele’s sentiments adding, “When you were at your low points as an athlete under Coach Monroe, he would drag you out of the depths and make you feel like you were the best skier in the world.” Both Adele Savaria and Skip Merrick went on to compete for the U.S. Ski Team.
The 2024 Monroe Cup featured two slalom races (four runs) on Saturday for the girls, and the same for boys on Sunday. The SVSEF Alpine U10 & U12 Travel Teams competed in the event, and athletes in the North Series of the Intermountain Division traveled from McCall Winter Sports Club (MWC), Jackson Hole Ski Club (JHSC), Bogus Basin Ski Education Foundation (BBSEF), Grand Targhee Ski and Snowboard Foundation (GTSSF), and Alyeska Ski Club (ASC) to make for a strong field of competition.
At the conclusion of both races on Saturday, SVSEF’s Savannah Pringle was awarded the Monroe Cup for her first and second overall place finishes; and Zachary Lighthart from Jackson Hole Ski Club (JHSC) won the Monroe Cup on Sunday having won both races for the boys. Awards were presented to the top five finishers for each race in the U10, U12, and U14 age categories.
“I can't thank Rotarun enough for all of their hard work to make this successful weekend happen,” said Harris. “I am always impressed with their attention to detail and we are all grateful to have such a special place here in our backyard.”

SVSEF FIS Athletes Heading to 2024 U18 Nationals
SVSEF qualifies more athletes than any other club in Western Region
The official boards for the U18 National Championships have been posted, and the SVSEF FIS Team will send 15 athletes to represent the Western Region in Jackson Hole, WY, March 2-8. Athletes must qualify to compete at U18 Nationals and each region (Western, Rocky-Central, and Eastern) has 20 quota spots for men and for women. In addition, the US Ski Team may utilize 10 development picks for athletes that didn’t qualify through criteria.
The Western Region includes the Pacific Northwest, Northern, Intermountain, Far West, and Alaska Divisions; or Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, California, Nevada, Utah, and western Wyoming.
“I am proud of our entire FIS program: athletes, coaches, teachers, parents, and supporters for focusing on the process of each individual throughout this season,” said Will Brandenburg, SVSEF Alpine Program Director. “The level of commitment it takes to travel, race, and accomplish this qualification while in high school truly requires a village of people who 'get it.' They fully support these student-athletes' goals both on the hill and in the classroom. We knew this group had a ton of depth, and having this many athletes qualify for an event of this level says something about both the athletes and the community that supports them”.
The U18 National Championships technical events will be held at Snow King Mountain on March 2-3 and speed events will be held at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort on March 4-8.

2024 Nordic Cup Results
