Keep Showing Up: Words by XC Gold Team Athlete Katie Feldman

Below are some thoughts and words by SVSEF Cross Country Gold Team athlete Katie Feldman, who grew up skiing with the SVSEF cross country program, headed east to attend Middlebury College, and returned to Sun Valley as a professional athlete. She recounts personal experiences, but the message is applicable across all disciplines. "Getting good at something is not ever a quick and easy process," noted Cross Country Program Director Rick Kapala in a note to his Comp Team athletes, introducing Katie's writing. "However, it is usually very rewarding precisely because the process is the actual thing that is beneficial to our development. So, as Katie reminds us, keep showing up."

Keep Showing Up
by Katie Feldman

One of the reasons cross-country skiing is cool: you have to keep showing up. You might look at the weather report, but you don't know when the sun is going to pop through the storm. You might be intimidated by your competition, but you never know when you're going to have a breakthrough race and be able to keep up with (or pass!) people who have previously skied away from you. Some days are perfect sunshine, perfect snow, perfect skis, and you go into them with a body that's ready to rip (these are the perfect days that get all the photos!) Some days it pours rain, is slippery mud, you don't feel good, and you still have a bounding workout to do. On other days, you wear all your warm layers, tape your face, and still finish the workout cold. When you have a hard day, your coaches and teammates support and show up for you; you can do the same for them. These hard days get done because they make the perfect days that much better. I've attached some pictures of the best days and the toughest days, I think you can guess which are which.

This season, all of our final races were cancelled in the face of COVID-19. Major bummer, even if we all know it was the right choice. We are all so lucky to have come to this place where the snow is still good, and - as long as we're healthy - we're able to recreate at a safe distance. There's great skiing up north and as Hailey dries out the running and biking will get better and better. I'll keep showing up to ski, and when the time comes next season, I'll be even happier to race than before.

I've seen lots of workout ideas coming from the coaches. Whether you're doing a quick home-strength session or getting out for a long ski, it all counts.

Hagenbuch, Palmer-Leger Medal at Nordic Junior World Championships

SVSEF Cross Country Comp Team athlete Johnny Hagenbuch was part of the men’s winning relay team in the 4x5km for a second year in a row at Junior World Championships on March 6, 2020. SVSEF teammate Sydney Palmer-Leger led the charge in the opening leg for the women’s team in the 4×3.3km relay – they took home silver. Both athletes qualified for the FIS sanctioned event in Oberwiesenthal, Germany, which hosted skiers from 40 countries. Photos by @flyingpoint.

Athlete of the Week: March 9

SVSEF provides ski and snowboard programming to nearly 700 athletes in the Wood River Valley. Athlete of the Week is an opportunity to highlight individuals who embody the values championed by this organization; sportsmanship, citizenship, character, teamwork, creativity, passion and perseverance.

Harper Mallett, Freeski Travel

"Harper is the hardest working freeski athlete I know and is always out there pushing the limits of his skiing. He is also a great role model for the next generation of freeski athletes. Look for great things from Harper in the future, on and off the hill!"
Tyler Conway
Freeski Travel Head Coach

Wesley Sewell, Baldy Devo

"Our Athlete Of The Week is Wesley Sewell – he is a super smooth skier with a great attitude and is an excellent teammate.
Wesley never complains and will ski any run. He is also very courageous, showing true grit after coming down with the flu; a tough way to get a personal flight to Boise. We are looking forward to seeing him soon back on team!"

Chad Pringle
Baldy Devo Coach

Sarah Leidecker, Cross Country Prep

"Sarah is one of the most helpful, positive skiers we have ever had on the team. She is always the first one to volunteer to help, and completes any and every task with a huge smile on her face. Sarah is capable of finding the fun in every task – even earlier this year when a significant injury could have brought her down, she persevered through and came back grinning and raring to go. Last weekend at the Intermountain Youth Championships, Sarah showed her appreciation for the sport and the people around her when she jumped up on the microphone at the awards banquet and took it upon herself to thank all the coaches and volunteers at the event on behalf of all the other competitors, not something a typical 7th grader would be eager to do. Sarah’s kind, positive nature is contagious and with her hard work and appreciation for every part of the sport, she is an integral part of the Prep Team."

Four SVSEF cross country athletes have been selected to represent the U.S. in this year's North American World Cup sprint competition, held in Quebec and Minneapolis, March 13-17. Kevin Bolger, Peter Holmes, and Katie Feldman, all members of the Gold Team, will compete. Sydney Palmer-Leger, a senior on the Comp Team, qualified but declined to attend.

Kevin qualified based on a number of top-30 performances in World Cup sprint events this season, while Peter, Katie, and Sydney qualified with a strong Nations Group of athletes based on top SuperTour results through this season.

"We’re really excited to have a number of athletes from SVSEF getting starts at these upcoming World Cups. It's been a big goal for these athletes to qualify, so it’s awesome to see it come together for them. The atmosphere and crowds in Quebec are always amazing and there’s going to be even more energy in Minneapolis, as this will be the first World Cup race on U.S. soil in 20 years," said Gold Team Head Coach Chris Mallory.

Following the Sprint Tour, Kevin and Johnny Hagenbuch will be starting Canmore World Cup Finals, March 20-22.

Dasha Romanov, Alpine FIS

Dasha Romanov is a senior at the Sun Valley Community School, but is a first-year FIS athlete. This season, she has seen success at NorAms and FIS races, earning a spot on a training and racing trip to Europe with the U.S. Development women’s team. In Europe, she tackled FIS races appropriate for her age and where she is developmentally, to see success and also compete in challenging fields. She competed in Utah for the FIS Elite Series – she had a number of good results, especially in slalom in her first runs, and was able to qualify for U.S. Nationals (unofficial). Most recently, she competed at Junior Nationals at Snowbasin, where she reached the podium in the slalom. Skiing to third place in a field that included skiers up to 20 years in age was a big accomplishment for a first-year FIS athlete. “She is extremely self-disciplined, amazingly so,” said Schwing. “Dasha battled some injuries earlier this season, with an ankle roll in the fall and a concussion at Thanksgiving Camp, which kept her out for much of December. She has definitely battled through those injuries, and it’s been awesome to see her succeed despite some setbacks.”

Jack Smith, Alpine PG

Jack Smith, who graduated from the Sun Valley Community School in 2019, is currently a member of the U.S. Alpine “D” Team, as well as the Western Region PG Team. Jack has been competing on the NorAm circuit this season, and based on results as well as discretion, was selected to represent the U.S. at World Juniors in Norway. He is the third SVSEF male skier to qualify for World Juniors in recent years, behind notable former SVSEF athletes Tanner Farrow and Kipling Wiesel. “Jack has clearly made it, based on his work ethic and passion for the sport – there is no mistake that he wants to be a ski racer. That’s what he works for, and it’s been cool to see him get the nod for World Juniors,” said SVSEF FIS coach Nate Schwing.

Freeski Travel/Progression

Slopestyle:
Young Barrett Beyer was able to put down a very clean run during Saturday’s slopestyle, ending his run with a massive 720 with a tweaked safety grab. Barrett secured a gold medal in the Grommet Boys division (8-9 years old). Leo Hayes was right on his tail, and found himself on the podium with a bronze medal.
In the Menehune Boys division (10-11 years old), it was Zack Torres’ day as he flew through the course and was technically sound, earning himself a gold medal. Teammate Kai Van Bueren oozed style and was able to put together a nice run and wound up in second place.
In the Breaker Boys division (12-13 years old), Ry Mann skied well and earned a bronze medal with his smooth style and strong execution. Spencer Ferries came in 4th, George Corkery was right behind him in 5th, Easton Turck in 6th, and Alex Leahy right behind in 7th.
Inez Kraynick took home a silver medal in the Breaker Girls division.
Anton Holter continues to be a force in the Big Mountain West Series, earning a silver medal in the Youth Mens division (14-15 years old) with difficult tricks and impressive fluidity.

Rail Jam:
In the 9 & Under Freeski Division, Barrett Beyer once again skied his heart out and found himself atop the podium, with teammate Leo Hayes right behind in third place.
Zeppelin Pilaro was back to his winning ways on Sunday, putting down some ridiculous tricks throughout the rail jam competition, and took home the gold in the 10-13 year old Freeski group. Teammates Kai Van Bueren, Zack Torres, and Easton Turck narrowly missed the podium, finishing in 4-6th place.

We're back with Athlete of the Week!

Astrid Villa came to the SVSEF Snowboard program this season as a WRHS senior. Astrid had been a recreational snowboarder, but her passion for the sport had grown beyond that.
She has approached joining the team as what I like to describe as her “senior project.” She shows up every day with a smile and a determination to improve, which are infectious and noticed by her teammates.
Her improvements have been many, including hitting her first park features ever this season! What she is doing is hard, and she approaches it with the best possible attitude. She has been a great addition to our team and an example for all of the riders on our team!

Every day on hill with Hunter has been a telling experience about how talented of a skier he is. No matter what conditions you throw at him, he finds a way to adapt and progress. Hunter's strong skiing fundamentals are a huge reason for his steady grasp of the Big Mountain scene. We're all very excited to see where Hunter takes his skiing from here, because he's going nowhere but up!

Bridget Lopez, Rota-Rippers

Bridget Lopez is our Athlete of the Week; she’s in second grade (7 years old), and she is so excited to be skiing! She can go up the lift and is able maneuver an obstacle course. She always has a huge smile and can’t believe Rippers will be over so soon – she has said she wants more time on skis! She is a delight to coach and always has an outstanding attitude.

Jaxon Patterson is the Mini X Athlete of the Week. Jaxon lives outside of the valley, and his folks have made a heroic effort to help him to get rad with us. He is grateful and kind, and he's also brave just taking on a rail with good speed for the first time, then taking it to the knee. It only took him about five minutes before he went right back to skiing the park at Dollar. Ow, that's tough! Jaxon is also dedicated, which shows through in his stellar attendance. Thanks, Stephanie, Jake, and Jaxon, we really enjoy having y'all on the team!

Anna Koonce, Cross Country Devo North

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_testimonial author="Susie Quesnel" job_title="Cross Country Devo North Co-Head Coach" _builder_version="3.3.1"]

Anna Koonce is our Athlete of the Week. This Devo skier has become such an incredible asset to the team after being on the team for years – now coming upon her “graduation” from the team, she has hit full stride as a leader. Although not thrilled about racing, she consistently takes full advantage of being on the team and is an integral part of it. She is thoughtful, caring, wants to learn, and mentors the younger athletes. Her willingness to volunteer for literally ANY job we need help with has been really refreshing (and very clearly demonstrated on the yurt trip). She is also such a fun type of goofy and if you ever need some great photos of a happy face you should loan your phone to her…
