Big Mountain Team Head Coach

The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation Big Mountain Team is currently hiring for an assistant coach position for the upcoming 24/25 Season. We are searching for a capable and highly skilled freeride coach who has experience working with high school aged athletes. This job offers incredible opportunities to work with some of the most talented and competitive junior freeride athletes in the country. Fall Dry-land: Sept 18 – Nov. 2
Wednesday – Friday 5:00 – 6:30

Winter On-Hill: Dec 1 – April 1
Wednesday – Friday 2:00 – 4:00pm
Saturday – 9:30 – 12:30am
Mondays and Thursdays – 4:30-5:30pm strength training

General Responsibilities:

  • Assist head coach with delivery of training, traveling and competition plans.
  • Be punctual and prepared for each training session.
  • Be responsible and help manage team equipment.
  • Attend monthly coaches meetings/downloads.
  • Work to ensure team expectations and philosophies are adhered to.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Assist in planning and designing athlete day to day on snow training program.
  • Assist with on hill and off hill coaching training sessions.
  • Attend bi-monthly planning meetings with Program Director.
  • Adhere to on hill safety measures.
  • Report any injuries to Head Coach/Program Director. Help submit required incident reports.
  • Communicate with Head Coaches and Program Director about any behavioral issues.
  • Assist with athlete evaluations.
  • All teams are to help with SVSEF fundraising events as requested by the Program Director or Executive Director.
  • Help with local SVSEF events and fundraisers as requested by Program Director and Executive Director.
  • Take video as appropriate at competitions and training sessions and have a plan to share video with athletes and parents.
  • For scheduled team backcountry days, help manage parent & athlete communication and logistics. Manage BMT athletes on these days and work closely with backcountry guides.

Competition and Travel:

  • Be knowledgeable about appropriate local, national, or international rules and regulations that govern Freeride Competitions.
  • Assist athletes and parents with entry process.
  • Help manage travel logistics for away competitions/ training camps.
    • Drive to training/competition venue
    • Attend coaches meetings.
  • Assist in conducting athlete/team competition info and meetings while at home and away competitions.
    • Consider both athletes who stay with the team or with parents.
  • Assist in athlete inspection runs before competition and help guide them into appropriate lines for their individual still levels.
  • Manage the supervision of athletes (who are staying with the team) while at away competitions.
  • Act professionally and abide by SVSEF code of conduct while traveling.


  • Help maintain inventory records of all BMT related program equipment (radios, video cameras, backpacks, on hill tool kits).
  • Repair existing program equipment if asked.
  • Assist in supporting the communication, selection and acquisition of athlete equipment.
  • Attend any ‘pro nights’ where ski industry reps are interfacing with athletes and parents if asked by Head coaches.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Able to manage and keep organized many different tasks simultaneously.
  • Able to adhere to SVSEF BMT vision and creatively implement programming and plans.
  • Open minded and willing to continue learning.


  • All coaches are required to have a USSA license and IFSA license – this cost is reimbursed by SVSEF.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires a considerable amount of physical exertion coupled with short periods of time that require sitting at a computer. Position requires on hill and other outdoor activities that necessitate exposure to seasonal elements including snow, wind, and extreme cold. May require lifting up to 50 lbs. Must attend SVSEF fundraising events, social events, and other functions when requested, and interface with sponsors, donors, coaches, athletes, parents and media.
