We’re proud to present the SVSEF graduating class of 2020 –

a talented group of individuals, both on the snow and beyond. Despite being unable to gather in-person to celebrate seniors at SVSEF year-end banquets this spring, we are excited to highlight our athletes and their accomplishments. Among the 36 graduates, some will be pursuing higher education at four-year universities, while others will be pursuing sport in the form of a post grad year. We wish the best to these remarkable, driven individuals as they take on whatever comes next.

Words of wisdom: Work hard but enjoy your time on the team because it will be over faster than you think.

High school: Sun Valley Community School

Years with SVSEF: 4

Favorite ski run/trail: I love training on Ottos. Or early morning training on Warm Springs.

What’s next: Middlebury College

Sports in college: I will not be skiing for Middlebury, but I would be interested in trying to start a club alpine team.

Best SVSEF memory: My best memories probably all happened at our California races. Something about California makes skiing that much more fun, whether it was the sunny days at Mammoth or Squaw Valley, or even the days cancelled at Mammoth due to its notorious fog and windy conditions. That’s where the “Female IMD Speed Team” came to be. Or van rides, blasting music, arguing, laughing etc. I will miss those a lot.

Words of wisdom: I truly think ski racing is a unique sport. While it is an individual one, it forms tight-knit bonds and a significant “team” feeling. It’s true that suffering brings people closer. I am not saying skiing is miserable by any means, but ski racers know true grit. The sport takes a huge amount of commitment regardless of who you are and that type of dedication is a quality that will take you far in life.

The team was there and they were all so excited about the run I had just completed and I felt so lucky to be part of this community. People were genuinely happy to be there and to watch good skiing. It was awesome.

High school: Sun Valley Community School

Years with SVSEF: 3

Favorite ski run/trail: Plaza

What’s next: Possibly college in New Zealand, possibly Montana. I still have much to work out, and the future remains to be seen.

Best SVSEF memory: This year at Red Mountain, we left our hotel room on the first day of the trip and noticed a couple of inches of new snow on the ground. As it turns out, it had snowed well over a foot on top of the mountain, and I had one of the best pow days of my life with a great crew from SVSEF. Good vibes and lots of stoke carried us through the rest of that trip.

Words of wisdom: Show up, even if you don’t feel like it. Building some level of discipline into your life is important far beyond the sport of skiing.

High school: Wood River High School

Years with SVSEF: 8

Favorite ski run/trail: Rip and Tear

What’s next: University of Pennsylvania

Best SVSEF memory: Camping in a saddle above the Salmon River Valley after backpacking through the snow for eleven hours.

High school: Sun Valley Community School

Years with SVSEF: 11

Favorite ski run/trail: Torin’s Tucker

What’s next: I will be attending Chapman University in the fall.

Best SVSEF memory: I think my fondest memories on the team can be boiled down to the countless hours spent in the vans. The hundreds of miles traveled on the desolate highways of the northwest accompanied by stories of how strong and handsome Rick Kapala once was (validity yet to be confirmed) defines my time on the team. The van rides gave us a chance to talk and check in with each other – something I appreciated more and more as I progressed through the program.

Words of wisdom:  Compete for the right reasons. Don’t let external voices dictate how you go about your respective sport, do it because you genuinely enjoy it.

High school: Wood River High School

Years with SVSEF: 10 years

Favorite ski run/trail: South Bench/Torin’s Tucker, as it has the best downhill.

College attending/what’s next: I will be attending Vanderbilt University in the fall to study Biology.

Best SVSEF memory: Camping out freshman year at Pio Camp at the base of Standhope.

Words of wisdom: Half of skiing is looking good.

High School: Wood River High School

Years with SVSEF: 11

Favorite ski run/trail: My favorite trail is the Ridge Run from the top of Trail Creek to Lake Creek.

What’s next: Next year I am attending Saint Lawrence University.

Best SVSEF memory: My best SVSEF memory is of sleeping out under the stars on the helipad on the last night of our training camp at the Haig Glacier in Canada with most of the team.

Words of wisdom: Always double check that you have the correct poles, always travel wax your skis, and remember to ski fast and look good but most importantly look good.

High school: Sun Valley Community School

Years with SVSEF: 12

Favorite ski run/trail: Psycho – Galena

What’s next: I’ll be taking a Post-Graduate year to compete internationally with the US Ski Team, but I’ll go to college at some point!

Sports in college: Cross Country Skiing

High school: Wood River High School

Years with SVSEF: 9

Favorite ski run/trail: Psycho

What’s next: Middlebury

Sports in college: Nordic Skiing

Best SVSEF memory: It was spring and we were doing a team crust cruise up at Galena. We had done some skiing around with the team, but eventually the team broke up into smaller groups. The group that I was with decided to climb up Galena peak, and let me just say, it was amazing. It was a perfect day with the sun shining and hardly any breeze. The crust was perfect on the way up which made it nice because there were some steep sections. As we reached the bowl, which was where we were planning on stopping anyway, the snow turned into perfect corn, which set us up for the way back down. Yes, the way down was a lot shorter than the way up, but it was worth every turn, tumble, and laugh.

High School: Wood River High School

Years with SVSEF: 10

Favorite ski run/trail: Torin’s Tucker at Lake Creek; overall favorite trail: Dead Dog Loop in West Yellowstone

What’s next: Middlebury College

Best SVSEF memory: My best memory is probably going to West Camp and skiing up the plateau on Thanksgiving as the sun was going down and watching the trees light up so that they looked like they were glowing and then racing back down for thanksgiving dinner.

Words of wisdom: The best advice I have is to not get caught up in the results and the mindset that you have to constantly be competitive. It’s important not to lose sight of the fact that we ski because we love it, so my best advice is to not let results become more important than skiing because we love to do it.

High school: Sun Valley Community School

Years with SVSEF: 1

Favorite ski run/trail: My favorite trails are Big Bi and Little Bi, because “Bi” is short for biathlon!

What’s next: University of Vermont

Sports in college: I plan to continue cross country skiing, but mostly focus on biathlon in college.

Best SVSEF memory: My favorite memory was running across West Yellowstone in the dark while playing Felon.

Words of wisdom: Enjoy the process!

High school: Sun Valley Community School

Years with SVSEF: 1 year

Favorite ski run/trail: Psycho at Galena Lodge

What’s next: I’m not sure as to where I am going or what is next but I do know I’ll be making a decision based on me and what I think will give me the best future.

Best SVSEF memory: Normally my favorite time of skiing is the spring, but as that was cut short I will pick the Senior Nationals trip with the team in Houghton, Michigan. I raced terribly, but had plenty of fun getting to know the team better.

Words of wisdom: Any words of wisdom I give can be taken however you want but my biggest belief is that everyone needs to create some form of guideline for themselves. You need to understand what you value most and that will help you with the rest of your life ahead. Do not make decisions based off of other people, do what you want to do. If you love doing it, do it, no matter the money or anything and do not let anyone tell you different. Most importantly never stop having fun.

High school: Sun Valley Community School

Years with SVSEF: 3

Favorite ski run/trail: Psycho up at Galena or Prairie

What’s next: University of Utah

Sports in college: Yes, cross country skiing

Best SVSEF memory: My favorite SVSEF memory is when the team does Save the Baby King in the fall. Everyone, no matter how fast they are, gets super competitive to get a wolf shirt in West Yellowstone. We all have to work together as a team to get through the different challenges.

Words of wisdom: Enjoy the process and don’t stress over the outcome.

High school: Sun Valley Community School

Years with SVSEF: 4

Favorite ski run/trail: North End loop

What’s next: University of Oregon

Best SVSEF memory: Fig Newtons and Lord of the Rings marathon at the Haig Glacier

Words of wisdom: Always make sure you have a left and a right boot before you leave your hotel room.

High School: Wood River High School

Years with SVSEF: 7

Favorite ski trail: Baker Creek, Harriman

What’s next: University of Washington most likely

Sports in college: Most likely soccer just for fun

Best memory: After carrying backpacks down from a backpacking trip the others went on for a fundraiser, we got to go to the Stanley Bakery. With a full stomach, we drove back past the most beautiful mountains, listening to Rick’s music and out of the blue he says, “I love this,” and someone asked what and he said coaching. It was a very wholesome moment where we did a good workout, helped the community, ate some good food, and all got to hang out and were really enjoying ourselves.

Words of wisdom: Remember to experience the sport and its community rather than just training to win.

High school: Wood River High School
High School: Sun Valley Community School

What’s next: Currently, I am not sure what’s next. I would like to go to college at either CU Boulder or the University of Utah.

Sports in college: I would like to keep competing in Slopestyle and will continue to keep whitewater kayaking.

Best SVSEF memory: I have had so many great memories over the past four years with SVSEF it’s hard to just choose one. I really enjoyed the Europe trip as a freshman with the alpine team and learning something new every day with the freestyle team.

Words of wisdom: Don’t forget to have fun with it.

High school: Sun Valley Community School

Years with SVSEF: 3

Favorite ski run/trail: Kaitlyn’s Bowl & The Trees between Limelight and Upper College (when there’s powder) – When there’s strictly groomers, I like any of the upper slopes on Seattle Ridge, including Gretchen’s Gold and Christin’s Silver

What’s next: Attending California Polytechnic State University in the fall for Mechanical Engineering

Sports in college: Planning on joining club/intramural tennis teams and trying to surf

Best SVSEF memory: February 2019, when we got feet of snow after having none for the beginning of the season

Words of wisdom: There will be bumps in the road, whether that be you don’t finish your race, you break some equipment, or you even break a bone. But! There is always next season and a passion for skiing/snowboarding is eternal.

High school: Wood River High School

Years with SVSEF: 1

Favorite ski run/trail: Broadway/Cold Springs

What’s next: University of Idaho
