SVSEF provides ski and snowboard programming to nearly 700 athletes in the Wood River Valley. Athlete of the Week is an opportunity to highlight individuals who embody the values championed by this organization; sportsmanship, citizenship, character, teamwork, creativity, passion and perseverance.
“Mini Shred” Team: Kiki Pate (11), Sophie Smith (11) & Callie Allen (10), Snowboard Devo
Kiki Pate, Sophie Smith and Callie Allen are ready to put all shredders on notice! The “Mini Shred” Team was put together to be a bridge between our Development Team and the Upper Travel Teams.
This crew has quickly shown that they can hold their own with anyone out there! Spotted last week with coach Jon French slaying the south slopes above lower River Run and dropping rocks in Cold Springs, we suggest you get out of their way! These ladies area force to be reckoned with. They bring a great attitude and energy to our team as a whole, and training days are always better when they are around.
SVSEF Dedicated Coach Award Winner Jon French had this to say: “These three young athletes represent the future of the Sun Valley Snowboard Team. They have had a great season so far, progressing their riding skills, supporting each other, and having a lot of fun. They always arrive eager to learn, with positive attitudes and great enthusiasm. Great job girls – thanks to you, we are very excited for the future of the team!”
Well done, girls!Andy Gilbert
Alex Leahy, 11, Mini Xtreme
Alex is a calm and focused athlete. His parents have provided him with a strong skiing upbringing. Earlier this season, Alex won a platinum medal in NASTAR, beating his closest competitors by seconds on a pair of fat twin tips. Alex is also drawn toward the style-y end of the skiing spectrum, with a sense of balance that is well developed – we really see this in the Air Barn and when he is sliding down rails in the park. Keep your eye out for this one on the Freeride World Tour, because not only is his skiing fluid and fast, his trickery is getting advanced by his willingness to work hard in the park and extreme terrain. In a chaotic and ego-driven world, what really stands out about Alex is how pleasant he is, providing balance for those around him.Ben Schumacher
Amelie Ries, 7, Dual Devo North
Amelie has really faced her fears this season and taken on challenges left and right. On an epic powder day she really stepped it up, and at the Arkoosh Cup she finished second in her age group. She has worked hard on her skiing, and it shows! We’ve enjoyed watching her confidence in her abilities grow this year. A big congratulations to Amelie, we’re looking forward to watching her journey unfold.Brian Caulkins
